He does that a lot. Last week, he said I was spoiled and effeminate growing up, when in fact I was hardly spoiled and, I have little doubt, that athletically the only thing he had over me was his abnormal size and strength which made him suitable for a football lineman position. You know what I mean.

There's no doubt I had him in baseball and in basketball -- and despite his size advantage in hoops, I know I would have dotted all over his slow, sorry white ass. Even today, I would dot all over his slow, sorry and now fat white ass. :kisswink:

Still smartin over that one, huh Joe?

BTW, I think I was better at basketball than football. Ran the 40 in the 4.7 range and had the agility skills and cat-like reflexes to play defensive end and outside linebacker. I also was a top notch volleyball player and played on UNI's club team that competed throughout the midwest. I could've and still can dunk over your midget, 50 year old, asthma-addled ass any day, if your mother would allowed it.

I've had a couple rough years dealing with a divorce, work, quitting chewing tobacco and cutting back on alcohol, but I've lost close to 45 lbs. since New Years and have 3- 5K runs under my belt this year so far - the last one clocking in at 31 minutes (I can run em on a treadmill less than 28 minutes). I play competetive basketball at least 1x per week at my health club and can fortunately still hang with kids half my age.

Anytime Joe. Will personally challenge you to a game of one-on-one for $10,000. Best of three, make it take it, gotta win by two. PM me if you want to arrange this. I may be out east (Pittsburgh) later in the summer and perhaps we could meet some place close.

If you ran a 4.7 40, with your size and weight, you'd have been a major D-1 recruit on the level of the Big Ten.

Don't try to bullshit me. You're one of those guys whose hoops game was/is to plant your lardy butt down low in the paint and kick the snot out of anyone who tries to drive past you. Great street strategy, but you'd be out in about five minutes in a regulation game.

As for the $10,000 bet -- I don't think you're good for it. :kisswink:

4.7 range - The best I ran was 4.78, but I was only timed as a recruit. I got faster probably up to my junior year in college. Keep in mind I was 6"4' and 225-245 in college. Chiseled muscle too.

Nice dodge as usual Joe. Sooooo, you're not going to take me up on the game? What's up? I'd be willing to put a $1,000 "retainer" in an account to be made payable to you if I default.

Again, PM me if you want to compete. I'd even make the trip to New York to play. :coffee:

Well, practically speaking, my wife would have my head if a bet even $1,000 on a basketball game -- even against some old, slow, has-been like you.

But if you do ever make it out here, let's play some games and get some cold ones, on me. (I'll admit that my game in hoops was always the point, which means one-on-one wasn't really my strength. I was a great passer with solid team instincts, though, and could even set up some immobile down-low bruiser with some easy chip ins). ;)

Here's my Glory Days moment: once in a law school pick-up game, I fed Butch Lee on an alley-oop. After he slammed it home, I told him as he was coming back on defense: "I just made you look good."

Oh c'mon D. Have you seen the stuff those jackasses do?

Like the time they had this speedboat playing out lines trying to foul the propellers of ships then when a ship runs into them they get all upset.

C'mon man.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

There must be more whales than we are led to believe if they are being mowed down by ships

--

A speed limit for big ships? Slow them down to protect whales, say environmental groups
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 6/6/11 | Paul Rogers

Alarmed by the increasing number of whales being killed in collisions with ships, four environmental groups filed a petition with the federal government Monday seeking to force large ships to slow down in waters between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The groups are advocating a mandatory speed limit of 10 knots -- about 11 miles an hour -- for all ships larger than 65 feet while sailing through California's four national marine sanctuaries.

The sanctuaries extend 300 miles down the coast from the Marin Headlands to Hearst Castle, and include waters around the Channel Islands, off Santa Barbara.

"Given the frequency of collisions between ships and these magnificent marine mammals, we believe that slowing the speeds of the ships can reduce the fatality rate," said Nicole Catalano, a spokeswoman for Pacific Environment, a San Francisco group that was among four organizations that filed the petition with NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

If NOAA fails to impose a speed limit, Catalano said, the environmental groups will consider filing a lawsuit under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act and other laws.

4.7 range - The best I ran was 4.78, but I was only timed as a recruit.
On the "life story" front I was a guy who played football starting in the third grade continuing through the ninth. I always started and I was usually the fastest guy on the team. I wasn't in the ninth grade but we had guys that were two or more years older than me on the team. Anyway after the ninth grade was the first time someone wanted me to work out in the summer time, etc. I was also entering my hippie phase plus we had "military style" coaches. You know; yelling, screaming, cursing. So I quit playing football.

Years later in college I got a McNeese track assistant to time me in the 40 just to see what I could do. He got 4.36 but I had a pretty strong tailwind so we turned around and ran it the other direction against the wind and he got 4.51. Made me wonder if I should've kept playing football.

Que sera sera. I like to think things happen for the best. Maybe if I'd have kept playing I could've ended up seriously injured and/or maybe would have a lot more aches and pains than I do now at +50 years old. But if I had it to do over again I'd go ahead and keep playing through high school to see how I'd do. Especially since the thought of working out in the summer doesn't make me cringe now like it did then. Back then I wanted NO part of working out with weights and now I like to do it.

Now back to the topic. I watched the show last night and there was an instance of the kind of crap I was talking about. They sent a little inflatable hull speedboat out to run across the path of a ship and deploy rope to foul the ship's propeller and they succeeded. So they fouled this ship's propeller in the Antarctic Ocean.

I know it's not as bad as the Somali Pirates but it also wouldn't be nearly as tough to put a stop to it. Somebody needs to do it. Those dweebs shouldn't be allowed to run around and do that crap with impunity. And whatever the Japanese whalers do to defend themselves would be justified.

That's true. I'd expect that way more than 99% of all species that have existed on Earth are now extinct and just did a quick Google search that yielded results consistent with that expectation. For some reason today's culture is afflicted by what I call a "preservationist" mentality. There's this idea that the world econsystem and all of that system's sub ecosystems are "in balance" and that if we change something about one there's this big potential for disaster because things have been thrown out of this delicate balance.

I don't think that's true. There is no static ecosystem that is in some fixed balance. Everything is in a continual state of change. New species appear and are a factor in older species going extinct. Climate changes whether humans are here or not. For instance: If the scinetific community is correct life on Earth is somewhere around 75% through its tenure on the planet because within about a billion years increasing radiant energy from the Sun will raise the temperature of the planet to a point at which liquid water cannot exist on the surface.

If the scientific community is correct there have also been great extinction events such that most of the species on the planet disappeared almost instantaneously in the context of geological time. There is no "moral" imperative to maintain the planetary ecosystem in any particular state or to preserve any particular species or set of species.

Some species and sets of species are important to our own survival. Oceanic phyoplankton, for example, fit that bill. But if whales go extinct we as a species almost certainly would hardly be affected at all. If we didn't know they existed already things in our day to day lives would not even indicate to us that anything had happened unless our day to day lives had something to do with them (like whalers or scientists studying them). Life would go on. It would have no more impact on us than the disappearances of the passenger pigeon and the dodo bird.

Don't get me wrong, I like whales. I think they're cool. But it's not the end of the world if they go extinct and I'm not going to harrass people who want to harvest them in international waters then eat them.
