Just because he lived part of the time in a National Park does not mean he was half-tame. The lion was 13 years old, average life-span 12-13 years. I wouldn't be surprised if the park and guides arranged to dispose of an aging animal and make some money off of it. Lots of these types of money exchanges happen in the world. Older lions are the most dangerous to humans, seeking easy meals, and humans are easy to catch. Lions attack between 500-750 people per year in Africa, and kill and eat many of those attacked. The story is presented by the press as the guy being a real idiot. Anyone that hunts with a bow or crossbow knows that they will be likely be tracking the animal after it is hit. Maybe a day, maybe 2, find the animal and shoot it if needed. I would like to know what really happened before passing judgement on this guy. Not jumping on the media sheeple-chase on this one.

"In early July, I was in Zimbabwe on a bow hunting trip for big game. I hired several professional guides and they secured all proper permits. To my knowledge, everything about this trip was legal and properly handled and conducted.

"I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt. I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt.


"I have not been contacted by authorities in Zimbabwe or in the U.S. about this situation, but will assist them in any inquiries they may have.

"Again, I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion."
