My DNA is predominantly Irish, yet I don't refer to myself as Irish-American. That's ridiculous. I have no ties at all to Ireland in probably at least five generations. And my ancestors who did come from there probably came here as indentured servants to escape famine and unspeakable cruelty from England, so cry me a river about slavery.
True dat.

There's nothing wrong with remembering/Preserving family history. But there's no need to be a "hyphen American" unless you actually were born somewhere else and are now an American.
So that's a "no" on the African-Americans?

Yup. Actually, there are many who refuse to be called that. Or maybe it's just the highly educated/successful blacks that I know.

How do they refuse to be called that?

Do they correct people?

Upon introduction, do they shake your hand and say 'Hi, I'm James. I'm not African-American, just American. Black is ok too (I guess) if you need to refer to me with a descriptor. Just call me James, or black James, or American James, please.'

There are some people from Caribbean countries like Haiti and Jamaica that hate it. Plus you have to think about people from the Sahara countries. Are they "African-American"?

Yes. We need to distinguish between Sub-Saharan African Americans and Arab African Americans.

What about white Sub-Saharan vs. black Sub-Saharan African Americans? I have a white friend from Namibia, is his son African American?
Being wrong about a topic is called post partisanism - kalm

MAQA - putting the Q into qrazy qanon qult qonspiracy theories since 2015.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

Thank you for your attention to this matter - UNI88

I'll give you an example. My former boss Stevie a black guy from Ga. He's a great guy and was introduced to our team. One of our guys was black and he invited Stevie to a "African American round table." Stevie tells us that he, " is from poor ass Ga. Has never been to Africa. Never wants to go to Africa. He doesn't know anyone from America. He's an American."

Anymore stupid questions?

Exactly. My friend Mike isn't African American. His parents came over from Haiti in the 70s. He's told me that he isn't African-American and hates that moniker.

We did call him black Mike to distinguish him from white Mike

Lately there have been a lot of white South Africans deciding they're Dutch again.

I didn't mention earlier that I don't think one can consider the kind of analysis referenced by the article linked at the start of the thread to yield a reliable estimate of the distribution of sentiment. It's an analysis of on line discussion; whether people making statements about candidates in various internet media made statements construed as positive, negative, or neutral about given candidates. It's not polling based on some effort to obtain probability samples or even polling at all. A change from earlier results could plausibly be attributed simply to a change in activity levels among supporters and opponents of each candidate. You could get a change in results like that without any change in the distribution of sentiments at all.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
