Pretty funny stuff JSO. Republicans hold ALL THREE legs of government but "they just signed their death warrant". You've gone full retard with your Trump hatred.

So what I'm hearing is:
- if Hillary had been elected, contrary to the robust checks and balances she'd have accomplished great things despite having both houses against her?
- Hillary is stable, despite her documented health issues, pay for play with the Clinton foundation, and only avoiding indictment because her campaigner-in-chief just happens to also be the AG's boss?
- The Clintons really don't have a corrupt legacy, it's actually just CGI and conspiracy theories, right?

America held their collective noses and voted for a wealthy blowhard over a wealthy blowhard with a corrupt political legacy last night. :coffee:

Don't be so dramatic. America will have it's 45th peaceful transition of power. Last night was such as strong example as to why the Electoral College works. Last night proved that Americans, when faced with a bombastic liar and a corrupt politician, they chose the liar over the corrupt. They weren't the best candidates, but Americans were ready for change. The Democrats weren't. They should've ran Bernie.

But once it got close I don't think this was as big an upset as people appear to think with respect to what the polls and projections were showing just prior to the event. Underdogs of that magnitude win about 30 percent of the time. Not rare.

538 had it at about 72% chance Clinton winning. The accurate way to state that is a 72% confidence level. In the world of statistics you would never look at a 72% confidence level as affirming an expectation. You would not say you can confidently predict something will happen at that level of certainty.

For the long term, I think the Republican Party just signed its death warrant. It's been stated ad nauseam but is nevertheless true that the proportion of non Whites in the electorate is growing. Clinton did not generate sufficient enthusiasm among non Whites to win because she was so flawed and battered. But I think Republicans electing Trump has left a bad taste in most non Whites mouths that is going to be nearly impossible to overcome for the foreseeable future. Even with a bad Democratic candidate non Whites voted for the Democrat by an estimated 74 - 21%. They accounted for an estimated 30% of the voters. It won't be long, in historical terms, before they are 40%, then 50%, then beyond that. The handwriting is on the wall for the Republican Party. It would've been difficult to stay viable with the shifting demographics in any case. Now I think it's going to be impossible.

As for all of us as residents of this land, we do have that system of checks and balances that will hopefully keep Trump from doing too much damage. All we can do is play our cards, control what we can, and make the best of what we can't. Also, since he lies so much, we can hope he was lying about some of the stuff like trying to slap huge tariffs on foreign goods and generally turning us into an isolationist economy. I think people who think his ideas in that area are are good are in for a rude awakening if he actually does it. T

I hate the Electoral College. I think the current systems allows apathy. I think the proper way to do this is to provide each state with an odd number of electoral votes, the number weighted to be in agreement with the population, and the votes split based on the popular vote in each state. There are just too many people that feel their vote has little impact in states that are lopsided.

If you give people a better reason to vote, maybe they will become better educated on issues.

Agree. I was telling my wife this morning, there's no reason why Russia shouldn't be our friend. We have nothing to lose by befriending them. Let them expend some treasure in the Middle East. We've got schools and roads that are more deserving of the money.

I'm interested to hear what her Chinese manufacturers think about this election. One of them has been very vocal about Trump (mostly positive.)

OK, funny story (well...if you don't have your head up Hillary's large arse).

We had a party out by the fire pit Monday night due to most folks having Tuesday off. The Commodores, "Brick House" came on, and one of our Hillary neighbors, a well educated (she has papers that says so) smiles and started moving and singing, and the other 5 ladies, with their wine glasses in hand, joined her. They had just finished talking about Trump's insluts (you know, I'm going to leave that typo :D ) about wimmen. So, I walked over and danced with them, and said, "Love this song!" They all said, "Yeah!" I then said, "I can cue up, "Baby Got Back" if you'd like," and they ALL said, "YES!"

ME: "Awesome...who knew...I thought you didn't like it when women were objectified. Are you ladies voting for Trump tomorrow?"

SILENCE.

The good thing is that I am extremely lovable.

The hypocrisy is stunning. They live in a world of denial.

Yesterday, one of my more obnoxious neighbors (the one with the husband that wants to move to Cuba...probably even more so today) confidently wore her pantsuit and chatted about the first woman President. Apparently, wimmen wore pant suits to support Hillary? UD was big on Hillary.

I would have loved to have seen her face this morning.

But, I was also gracious...Lil' Cluck and Mrs. Cluck woke up last night, and they watched Trump's speech. Since Lil' Cluck lost sleep, I let him sleep in and drove him to school. I would have LOVED to have seen the faces of my neighbors at the bus stop this morning. ALL of them voted for Hillary.

Oh well, there's always tomorrow. :thumb:

Update: CNN still trumpeting Hillary's popular vote.

Looks like it. And yes, this is an election where having the electoral college works out better than just relying on the popular vote. Having just one section of the country (or two - the northeast and the far west) in large majorities decide the election, while ignoring everything else in between, just wouldn't be representative. I like that you have to appeal to different segments of the country to win this thing, and the electoral college still requires that.

We've had 56(57?) POTUS elections in this US and only 4 of those did the winner of the popular vote not win the Presidency. So..what's that? 7%? 93% of the time the winner has both the Electoral and Popular vote.

He's down 175,754 votes in the popular count. He'll probably make up that difference. And if he doesn't so what?
