Didn't the PATCO strike take care of that a long time ago?93henfan wrote:This news went around the office last week via email. I replied all, "make morale great again." That got some chuckles.
I see the procedural move as establishing a way to cut certain programs. Those employees would then essentially be RIF'ed elsewhere. There are long-established rules in place for that. That wouldn't hurt folks in places like DC too badly, because they could simply move down the street to another agency, unless their career is such a niche that it doesn't translate elsewhere. It would indeed suck for people with no other office nearby to move to. I am fortunate in that regard, because every agency has a procurement function.
I think the R's will run into legal trouble if they try to take away established employee protections. I think this is mostly going to be a drill about rewriting the rules for new hires. This happened in the late 80s when FERS replaced CSRS. Legacy employees' benefits were not affected. However...
An almost certainty is that they will take away the government contribution to pension in this latest go-round, which will equate to about an effective 5% pay cut for most federal employees. They tried to do that a few years back during the budget showdowns, but it didn't go through. This time it very well might.
There will also undoubtedly be a hiring freeze. Agencies were advertising like crazy in Nov and Dec trying to fill every vacancy in anticipation of this. I don't have a lot of heartburn with shrinking agencies through natural attrition. People find a way to adapt.

No idea. I can't be in a union due to the nature of my job. I'm referring to protections under US Code rather than any collective bargaining agreements. Anybody who would keep striking when ordered by the President to return to work is not too sharp, especially when they're crippling transportation. Not sure how it relates to this though.houndawg wrote:Didn't the PATCO strike take care of that a long time ago?93henfan wrote:This news went around the office last week via email. Since the strike was broken I assumed that whatever protections existed had been diminished.93henfan wrote:No idea. I can't be in a union due to the nature of my job. Keep in mind two things, 93: densedawg is a former Army puke, AND a union fella. Thus, "a full days work" to him is him squeeeeeeezing 90 minutes of work into an 8 hour day....and just being fucking exhausted by it.93henfan wrote:Y'OK, Cooter.houndawg wrote:

No, but your hyperbole is noted - I figured you'd have learned your lesson when you tried to claim the Foreign Service is a union shopSkjellyfetti wrote:Yeah... The Bureau of Consular Affairs is budget neutral - look it up. We generate more than our operating budget in consular fees and the overage goes back, minus costs for rescuing dumb Americans overseas.

1% of the Americans in trouble overseas aren't dumb, just unlucky. But the vast majority that we have to repatriate should never be traveling overseas, ever.

Re: Hard times a comin' for gubmint workers
I alluded to most of this earlier in the thread, but here are the likely-to-happen items regarding the federal workforce under the 115th Congress:
http://federalnewsradio.com/commentary/ ... -congress/
These would have little to no impact on me, other than the pay freeze (and I don't really care because I'm still getting step increases - I didn't really feel much pain under Obama's three year pay freeze) and if the increased pension contribution (not mentioned in this article) comes to fruition.

I'm almost certain that this rule is going to be aimed at burrowed political appointees. That said, they could easily halve the Federal workforce and nobody would notice. Not even their coworkers.
