Lopez Obrador’s spokesman, Jesus Ramirez, said the image was an example of the National Guard doing its job of looking after public security. He said the soldier did not impede Perez from crossing, but advised her of the dangers of doing so.

“The Guard combats the crime of people trafficking and protects the human rights of the population and of the migrants crossing the country,” Ramirez said.

An official with the National Guard said the soldier “invited her to avoid putting herself at risk by crossing the river with a minor.”

In June, Lopez Obrador said the National Guard did not have orders to detain migrants crossing the U.S. border. He regularly emphasizes that the clampdown must not violate rights.

"Lopez Obrador" is Mexican President Manuel Lopez Obrador. What you're seeing reported there is that he has NOT told his troops to forcibly stop Central American Migrants from entering the United States. In other words: Trump has been bullshitting you about the nature of the agreement. He has been making it sound like Mexico is using troops to stop people from crossing. That's not what's happening. Mexican troops are ADVISING the Central Americans that maybe it's dangerous for them to cross.

Shocker: Trump has been lying to you about what is actually going on.

The tweet was misleading. You have to read the article to learn that it isn’t a big bad American soldier denying entry. And most Americans won’t read the article - we prefer the Cliff’s Notes.

My understanding is that our troops...national guard or regular...would not be involved in something like that. My understanding is that they have no direct role in stopping people from crossing the border. That's ICE's responsibility.

When I first saw that tweet and saw that you thought it was misleading I thought you it might lead people to think it was a Guatemalan soldier when it was really a Mexican soldier. I'm not kidding. The idea that it might be perceived as a US soldier didn't enter my mind until later when I could see where you guys were going because my understanding is that you would not see a US soldier in that situation.

If I somehow saw that tweet without having had this conversation I would not have thought that was a US soldier.

As I said, the fact that we are having this discussion makes it self-evident that it would have been better if they'd have done something like added "Mexican" before soldier. But I don't think that means they intentionally misled people. Nothing they wrote in that tweet is untrue. It could have been more precise. But it was not inaccurate.

It has been repeatedly reported by various outlets that the US military can play no direct role in stopping people from crossing the border. It was especially prominent during reporting related to Trump ordering the National Guard to become involved.

I don't think it's fair to blame the media if people don't understand that at this point.

I think it was probably lazy or unthinking on Reuter’s part. And there is a slight possibility that whoever put the tweet out was being intentionally misleading by omission.

But given that Reuters is just about the last Western outlet that can lay claim to neutral objectivity, they should be jealously guarding that. That tweet opens them up to questions about objectivity - because perception is everything in this day and age

Just came back to say that there is a reason why I would never have interpreted the picture as showing a US soldier. The reason I had the impression that a US soldier would not be involved in that situation is because the mainstream media reported that. I don't remember the first time I heard the mainstream media report on the Posse Comitatus Act. But I know I learned of it from mainstream media reports. It was never covered in any of my Civics classes. Also, I recall the mainstream media reporting, when Trump ordered the National Guard to the border, that they would not be directly involved in stopping border crossings. They would be doing things like putting up concertina wire and providing logistic support.

Is it the media's fault if they report things like that and somehow it doesn't register with people? Anybody who has been paying attention to media reporting over time would know that was not a US soldier. So why is it misleading for a tweet to go out with a picture like that W'ITH a link to an article that starts with a paragraph saying it's a Mexican Guardsman? Is it really the MEDIA's fault if somebody sees "Soldier" and thinks "US Soldier" when it's been widely reported that US soldiers aren't in situations like that?

Yup. With either the cropping or selective framing to not show the soldier's identifying insignia there is little room for doubt on the intent of that photo. Because you can bet the farm that if there was a US flag on that right arm, it sure as hell would have been in the photo.

This is ridiculous. The tweet shows a woman interacting with a soldier. It doesn't say it's an American soldier. And the tweet has a link to the article. The article states in the first paragraph that it's a Mexican National Guard guy.

This is how bad it is with this "fake news" and "liberal media" propaganda and paranoia. It's not "fake news." Like with what happened with the Muller report. One reason it had limited impact is that just about everything significant in it had already been reported on by the mainstream media. And when they did report things Trump called it fake news. But it wasn't fake news. It was the truth.

It's not the the media don't make mistakes at times. They do get it wrong at times. But they get it right way more often than they get it wrong. And the overall picture they've painted with respect to Trump Administration, its impacts, and the Republican Party at this time is accurate.

People i the Trump cult don't like the media because the media are after the truth and Trump's whole modus operandi is deception and misinformation. Thats why he's attacked the media for the start. He knows the truth is his enemy so he doesn't want people to believe the truth when they hear and/or see it.

What I'm triggered by is the constant attacks on the "mainstream media" by people on the right when the real misinformation problem is associated with Republican politicians and "right wing" media sources. A system of representative government has an issue when reasonably accurate sources of information are under frequently successful attack like the "mainstream media" are now.

I said/wrote it long ago early in Trump's campaign for the Presidency: This is a guy who has a lot of skeletons in his closet and who operates by scamming and lying to people. It was important to him to discredit the mainstream media because he knew they would call him out on it. He knew that he had to try to discredit them in order to keep people from believing the truth. And the extent to which he's succeeded in that effort is very disturbing.

I don’t necessarily think that. There are a number of gifted modern satirists you and I can agree on. PJ Orourke might be one. Hell even Ben Shapiro has his moments. Like many modern satirists, Stewart had a team of talented writers behind him. But his delivery was truly great. I’d still place him behind Colbert though. You and I both appreciate the art so I’ll cut you some slack on your snide and close minded effort here.
