As a Catholic, I believe marriage is between a man and a woman in love to --->create<--- a living being. Strong EMPHASIS on CREATE.

You're certainly free to voice that, gz, but in my opinion and that of many others here, you are very wrong. Nonetheless, thanks for participating.

You say: "as A catholic"
So one can assume you don't just pick and choose what you believe...
you believe as instructed by the church correct..?
- Big 10 Football - So boring Wisconsin is our most exciting team...
- Big 10 Football - Where 117th ranked Purdue is dominant...
- Big 10 Football - Where team speed and passing offense are not required...

I am in favor of the death penalty in extreme cases.... So no...
Morals play a role, but it's not necessarily the Catholic teaching which dictates my opinion.

Even if it did, what is wrong with that?

I'm always curious about people who identify them selves as "a Muslim" or "a Catholic" or a Mormon" when commenting on their beliefs... and then without fail shortly after calling themselves something - they defy it by choosing something counter to that religions written position...

why call yourself "a Catholic"..?

I've always found it fascinating

Well, Wedgie, gz is in the gross minority here, it seems, and he's presenting his thoughts maturely, so we don't need to go to extremes to counter him. Very few priests are into litle boy buggering.

guinzone, seems to me, just can't make the high order-thinking leap required to divorce one's thoughts, cemented by his upbringing, into those that recognize the sovereignty of individuals and free choice.

Two questions then:

So if a man or woman are incapable of having children (age, medical condition, desire), then we should prohibit them from marrying? PFL has stated she never wants kids, so marriage is off limits to her?

And how do you feel about civil unions?

I believe a marriage is between two people who love each other, regardless of sex, skin color, religion, nationality or anything else...

So the question is....

Why do religious people think what they believe matters more then what others believe?

So if my wife & I choose not to "create" another life we don't have a true marriage or should not be married?

The sacrament of marriage, and the legal joining of two people known as marriage are two ENTIRELY different things. guin, ssm is not going to take place in your parrish, they are not going to fulfill one of the sacraments, but the benefits that come legally with marriage, are limited to to a select group of the population, and that just isn't fair. I'm sure if gay people chose to be gay we could have a different discussion, but some dudes are attracted to other dudes, some ladies to other ladies, and your idea of traditional man and woman, and none of those are any less natural than the other. Civil rights my man. Not to mention your "Catholicism" has no place in law, so the point is mute. Can't be creating laws based off of religion now can we?

maybe because you are fighting for respect from an entire nation, while bashing one of the most widely held beliefs in it? and it makes you look like a douche. Singling out select people from a HUGE belief system and equating it to a whole. It is just ignorant, really.

So would everyone be happy if the term marriage is reserved for the religious joining of a man and a woman, and the term Civil Union is the legal and recognized description of two people regardless of what sex they are?

More than likely. Also if the benefits of marriage went along with the Civil Union. ie. spousal priv., estate taxes, living will, yada yada

I guess I should have included that. I meant that you and your partner go to the courthouse to get your Civil Union License but you go to your church to get married. Civil Union is for everyone and it has all the legal aspects of what we now call a marriage. A church can then decide if they want to perform a wedding ceromony for two guys, already in a Civil Union, in order for them to have a marriage.

Makes sense, so probably a no go.

This is the stand that I take. Any human should be able to enter a legally-bound civil union, with all of the legal trappings that entails. If a church wants to hold an ssm ceremony, have at it. It won't make my balls fall off.

The government has no business defining marriage, only civil unions.

Ha, you beat me to it.

If marriage is solely for procreation, I'll stay single, thanks.
