As China restricts rare earths, Trump targets ethane in plastics manufacturing blow
It's good that we have a cudgel similar to China's rare earth. The Trump administration plans to reject U.S. ethane exports to China that are heavily relied upon for plastics manufacturing in an apparent escalation of the temporary trade war truce between the world’s biggest superpowers.
The move may come in response to China placing restrictions on the exports of certain rare earth metals to the U.S. that are required for the tech and auto industries as the two countries continue to accuse each other of violating the trade truce.
...
The potential denial comes after the Commerce Department told U.S. companies in late May it would immediately require them to receive special federal licenses to export ethane and butane to China because of the “unacceptable risk” the natural gas liquids could be utilized for a “military end use.”
China is by far the largest importer of American ethane—the most common building block for petrochemicals and plastics worldwide. The U.S. is the only major exporter of ethane, making China entirely dependent on America’s exports. Roughly half of all U.S. ethane exports go to China, and the cargoes are not easily redirected to other nations.

Re: Trump 2.0: MAGAA
Hedge funder Ken Griffin doesn’t get why Trump wants to take China’s jobs: ‘Why are we aspiring to be the nation of the lowest- cost workforce in the world?’
Good questions and points. Why donald?Citadel CEO Ken Griffin says President Donald Trump’s tariff policy on China is misguided as the jobs it would “reshore” are mostly those making low-value items. “There’s no money in there for anybody, and there’s certainly no money for doing those jobs,” Griffin said at a forum in New York.
...
“China dreams to be like the United States—a nation of very high value-added jobs, a nation rich in services, rich in high development … [with] a stunning GDP per capita,” Griffin said.
“‘China aspires to be like the United States,’”Griffin said a Chinese government official told him. The person said, “‘We want to be like you. Why are you trying to be like us?’” and gave “a look of befuddlement,” according to Griffin.
Griffin said he does support reshoring jobs—but for high-technology, high-value products.
“It’s one thing to make Nikes, it’s another thing to make F-35 fighters,” he said.

‘CBO estimates’ sound about as reliable as pre season polls.UNI88 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 04, 2025 10:10 am Trump tax bill will add $2.4 trillion to the deficit and leave 10.9 million more uninsured
There's the answer to the question of how many of those losing coverage are illegal immigrants - 1.4 million out of 10.9 million. That leaves 9.5 million with status.President Donald Trump’s big bill making its way through Congress will cut taxes by $3.75 trillion but also increase deficits by $2.4 trillion over the next decade, according to an analysis released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
The CBO also estimates an increase of 10.9 million people without health insurance under the bill by 2034, including 1.4 million who are in the United States without legal status[/size][/b] in state-funded programs.
https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/la ... -trillionsoutlined how the Congressional Budget Office missed projections related to the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act, Trump’s signature bill in his first term.
"The current cost of the 2017 tax cuts should be zero. Why should they be zero? Because they actually produced more revenues, $2.3 trillion more revenues than CBO estimated over the past seven years," Kudlow said.
He added, "So current policy shouldn't be scored. The deficit impact should be neutral. Now, I believe there will be a growth dividend which may be debatable, but if I plug in 3% growth instead of the CBO's lowball 1.8%, then I actually get $4 trillion worth of additional revenues for purposes of deficit reduction."
Kudlow continued, offering up some caveats, but noting the CBO’s estimates rely on GDP of 1.8%, which is a low figure.
You can play with these numbers interactively. If you lower the growth dividend, let's say to 2.6%, you'll probably lose up to two trillion in revenues and deficit reduction," he said. "Or if you want to use CBO's dreary 1.8% growth, you'd probably lose the whole four trillion in additional revenues and deposit reduction."
Kudlow noted, "You'd still come out ahead on the deficit reduction scorecard, but just not as much. But importantly, the GOP will prevent a $4 trillion tax hike, which would be catastrophic for the economy."
According to Kudlow, it is not the only time the CBO has missed estimates. For example, with the Affordable Care Act, the CBO initially estimated up to 25 million people would sign up for healthcare on the Obamacare exchanges by 2017. The actual figure in 2017 was only 12 million, a significant miss of 13 million people.
Also noted were the potential savings from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The CBO initially estimated billions in deficit reduction, but the latest estimates show it could add $428 billion to the deficit. The CBO made such projections assuming that the more significant tax cuts in the 2017 package would expire at the end of 2025...

Re: Trump 2.0: MAGAA
Speaking of being partisan, unreliable and dishonest, when trump's tax cuts were passed in 2017 they didn't need to be budget neutral because they were temporary. Now they want to make them permanent and are arguing that they don't have to be budget neutral because they're a continuation of existing tax policy.BDKJMU wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 5:52 pm Also on the CBO being ‘non partisan’

A reliable and honest conservative wouldn't vote to make them permanent unless they were budget neutral (i.e there were offset by spending cuts).
The OMB is more biased and less reliable than the CBO.

Both, but I voted MAGA.
I agree with most of MAGA.
I agree with the majority, but not all of the Libertarian Party platform. The biggest disagreement by far I have is complete open borders. Also they are for total free trade, with no requirement that things vital to national defense and US way or life be made in America; and irregardless of US job loss.
