This has gotten less and less press as the years go on, but we've had a fair amount of not-so gracious transfers of power from one administration to the next in recent times. In 2001, remember when all those Clinton folks destroyed a large number of keyboards by removing the "W" from them prior to Bush taking over? And then for the next 8 years claimed that Bush was an illegitimate President and we had Congress folks in both of his elections vote to try to overturn the election results? Through Obama's elections we had even more GOP Congress folks vote to try to deny the election results in both of his elections. And then in 2017 we had Obama and his team make sure to flood government agencies with random, and ultimately disproved Russian propaganda material that the election was stolen (as opposed to Hillary just fumbling the election by not campaigning in the rust belt) so that the incoming administration would be investigated and impeached over the next couple of years. And again, Congress folks (Dem's this time) voting to uncertify the election results. And then Trump ups the ante in 2021 by helping to stoke a violent mob at the Capitol while even more GOP folks were trying to block that election.
Amazingly, and for whatever reason (fixing the electoral count law was probably a big help), this year is shaping up to be the quietest and the least obtrusive handover of power we've had in several years. Biden is doing his best John Adams imitation to try to stuff as much stuff in before he leaves, hoping that his successor won't be able to overturn everything, but like with most things Biden it's not terribly thought out or effective. I don't have high hopes for the next four years, but at least if we can transfer nicely from one administration to the next at least that will be better than where we've been.
