Yeah, not sure why everyone was avoiding the inevitable. Kansas did this weeks ago. I'm sure lapdog Carney will close DE schools before the end of this week. He does whatever MD and PA do first.

Some good news...go Cali!

Good afternoon, here are today's numbers.

1) The trend of a slowing rate of daily increase in infection seems to be taking hold across the globe, with a few exceptions.

2) Russia appears to be accelerating, I'm not following their local news casts so not sure why, but even if I was I wouldn't believe them, but the reported numbers are indicating a quickly accelerating infection rate.

3) There is a cluster is South America that is beginning to look worrisome: Colombia, Chile, Peru & Brazil - they are all starting to post multi day double digit rates of infection increase, when everyone else is decelerating. This is problematic.

4) Nigeria and Niger could be warming up to accelerate too.

5) The Pacific Northwest Continues to utterly hammer the curve, today Governor Inslee said they are disassembling the field hospital that was just erected 4 days ago at Century Link Field in Seattle and are returning it to FEMA because there is no current need for it. Washington fell another spot to 12th Nationally today among states.

6) Washington DC has a BIG Uptick Day.

7) Texas also looks like it might be accelerating.

8) California is starting to act like a sovereign nation state and bulk buying disposable supplies and is going to warehouse them for use both in California and and across the nation starting next month, in anticipation of a second and third wave of this before we get to a vaccine. The first buy they made a contract for 200 million N95 Masks per MONTH. Gov. Newsom has said they will supply first responders in California first then supply the partner states in the Pacific and Mountain West that are participating in this program as "partners", then the rest of the nation. This is the type of thing the US Government through FEMA should be doing. Probably not enough money in to for Jared, so they wont... yes that was uncalled for snark on my part and use Sorry, Not Sorry.

Hidden in all of this is a clue -

That maybe... just maybe -

The states do better for themselves and we should stop looking for competence from the central government
Or maybe we should stop electing a party whose sole goal is to get government so small you could drown it in a bathtub, and has collected the most incompetent set of grift-first jackasses this country has ever seen?

If we believe what we say when we say our federal system of government leads to at least 50 laboratories of different government, there will be a reckoning when all of this is over regarding what went wrong in NY, and in NYC specifically. Agreed - outdoor road construction and other projects are perfect to be done now - they don't involve a lot of close personal contact, and where they do it's not a big deal for these crews to wear masks (which in some cases they do already). And of course with other lockdown things (i.e. no school, work at home for many, etc) there's so few people on the road (my commute to work is easily 15 minutes faster in each direction now). Now's the time to think optimistically and strategically and get some stuff done.
True. I think April in the low point though. I think it will begin to pick up May & June, depending on state/region, and continue to increase throughout July & Aug. Think we'll be a little less, but somewhat close to normal, by the fall.

Exactly. Less than two weeks ago experts told us 2 million Americans were going to die. The estimates are now down to 66,000 or less. Trump has saved the lives of 1,934,000 Americans by his actions.

60,415 according to the IHME/Univ Washington model. In a country of 329+, million 60K is about 1 in every 5,500 people in the US. .00018%.
And at the rate they keep revising this downward, it likely to be more like 50k, just like I predicted on the Death Pool thread. The modelers were saying at 1st 2.2 million.

NY metro area was just one giant toxic brew for the Chinese Virus..
I agree with all of this, with the exception of where it came from. Saw a study today that said the virus circulating through NY right now is more European-sourced as opposed to the strain that was coming directly from China. Obviously still started in China and got to Europe, but the main vector for what got to NY appears to be from what got passed to Europe. Probably should've stopped all air travel coming into America earlier (like when we started cutting off travel from China) rather than waiting until early March to cut off flights coming in from Europe. Certainly would've been hugely controversial to cut off air travel that early (heck, people were up in arms when we cut off Europe air travel when we did) but it probably would've saved a lot of lives.

On the same vein, there's no doubt that at many levels, federal (Trump), state (Cuomo in particular), and local (De Blasio), leadership was slow and poor, and that's resulting in some of the death totals (would've still been horrific, but likely a far lower death toll). However, the disruptions to our way of life may not have been all that different - air travel would've been cutoff, schools would be closed, non-essential businesses would be closed, and so on, just as they are now. Heck, even if we, the US, handled this perfectly, we wouldn't have been able to make the rest of the world handle things any differently and the rest of the world is shut down too. We still now don't even have an idea of how to bring those things back, we just keep pushing out the timeframe for which to solve them (schools closed for rest of academic year, talk of not even having a fall sports season, etc). We really need to come up with answers on not only how to get back on track now, but also how to avoid this in the future when China or someone else screws up again and unleashes another virus onto the world. It was China this time, but it could easily happen again. What do we do about that?

Think it was people just not wanting to think about the inevitable. Sucks for the kids - we're asking them to do a lot of sacrificing for something that doesn't really impact them themselves - kids get the virus, but at incredibly smaller rates and have far less significant outcomes. They're really sacrificing for the rest of us. Kids lose school, the learning, sports seasons, graduations, proms, shows, concerts, trips, etc. I think most knew this was going to be the outcome, but pushing off the finality of it was just a defense mechanism. All 3 of my boys lost their spring sports season, and I have an 8th grader ending middle school and a 5th grader ending elementary school this year. Luckily none were seniors in high school (my oldest is a 10th grader - just missing concerts, trips, some competitions, and HS baseball this year). Sucks for those kids.

It did start in November.

Link

US spy agencies were tracking the rise of the novel coronavirus as early as November, weeks before that information was included in President Donald Trump's daily intelligence briefing, a former US military official told CNN.

While the exact date of the first report remains unclear, sources told CNN that intelligence gathered in November and in the weeks following offered multiple early warnings about the potential severity of the pandemic now surging in the US.

And he could do that with the Dems maybe not even having a convention, just doing it virtually. I'm not sure Joe looks good in a virtual-only convention. The Dems really need to try to get an actual convention in if they can, just for the enthusiasm perspective.

I never buy the expensive bats - my kids are already conditioned to getting by with the $100 bats. I did buy my oldest cleats for the year (something like $80) since he had high school baseball that started earlier, but luckily I hadn't bought anything for the younger two and I hadn't bought any track cleats for my middle one (he's a pretty good long distance runner). He'll miss his last year of CYO track now as a result, but we do remember him running and anchoring the 4x800 team that won the archdioceses last year at Franklin Field so that's a cool memory to be the last race he ran in CYO (that's some real shameless Dad bragging there).

The toll could be less if Trump had gotten out of his way and taken it seriously before it was a problem.
Is it Monday morning already?

Yeah, not sure why everyone was avoiding the inevitable. Kansas did this weeks ago. I'm sure lapdog Carney will close DE schools before the end of this week. He does whatever MD and PA do first.
College too. 89Jr is missing out on Spring Senior which is usually the best semester you will have in college. Job offer was secured. High honors GPA was locked in. Everyone is 21 and doesn't have to use fake ID's. He had his schedule worked so he only had classes on Tues/Thurs. Had bought a semester membership at the UM golf course. Had a spring break ski trip planned and paid. F. :(

THANK YOU TRUMP. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

Please be sure to let America know when this becomes a problem. It's media hype that Hitler would bow down to
