Yes, a direct quote. As in "the market reacted to the results of the political election" just like it did in '16 when the "Trump Bump" happened and the market spiked upwards and continued upwards at a rate unseen for the previous three years.

Yep...it had nothing to do with a world wide economic panic and uncertainty. It was all a reaction to Obama.

Was this a serious question?

https://www.9news.com/article/news/nati ... cf66c070b6

The answer is obvious. You get pictures of Trump when you Google "idiot" because Trump is a high profile idiot. Don't blame Google.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

I listened to most of the hearing and it was cringe-worthy AF. The technical incompetence of Congress should scare the hell out of everybody; it was old people asking for Geek Squad support...from Google's CEO.

And these people are making rules when they have no idea how any of it works.

You don’t think they don’t have staffers, researchers and let’s not forget LOBBYISTS helping them understand tech?

Christ. C’mon, Trips. It’s like you don’t understand how Congresspeople and their staff function.

Go listen to that hearing and consider that reply again. You're assuming the politicians fully grasp what people with more knowledgeable are explaining to them.

I've personally known quite a few staffers over the years (although none right now). They get off work and bitch about how stupid their bosses are.

And lobbyists? Buy a few drinks for the next one you meet because if they like you enough, they'll give you great stories about how they were able to manipulate a politician. FFS, I knew one that had a large picture of Trump and Clinton in a closet before the election ended so that on November 9, he could immediately put up a pic of the winner is his office. Loyalty to themselves above all.

Of course not, but I do expect them to keep up with basic technological practices when the society and economy they represent is completely dependent on said technologies, and will become even more so. Asking basic IT questions to the CEO of one of the most powerful companies in the world is a red-flag.

I don't see how that makes me wear blue blinders.

Well read, experienced technocrats don't win elections, Treep.

The last one I knew to hold public office was Senator Jim Webb of VA. He won elections because he carried the bubba western VA Scots Irish vote because of his background, and enough Fairfax County votes because he was a Democrat. But the dude speaks in essays, not soundbites and people like him generally lull the masses to sleep rather than inspire them to the ballot box

Maybe once all you "progressives" take over in your grand wave you can do away with elections and just appoint knowledgeable people to office...

There is plenty...PLENTY of things that make us all roll our eyes when it comes to US Congress people. But this...maybe I don't see it.

I'm not really worried about a freshman congresswoman who is 1/435 of the HoR. She's got that "cult of personality" thing going for her. Like I've already said, the HoR is for all the crazy ideas and crazy whims of the public to have their say...but it's moderated and toned down to the point where nothing, if ever, comes from it. She's got a large social media following, which I guess matters these days. I don't know... I think she'll fizzle out when she learns how the Congress works.

Trump signs executive order promoting 'opportunity zones' in distressed towns
President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to create a new White House council for promoting private investment in “opportunity zones” in more than 8,700 distressed communities across the U.S., aiming to expand prosperity to neglected zip codes.

The council, to be chaired by Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, will help streamline applications for communities to qualify for the investments, the president said.

“Our goal is to ensure that America’s great new prosperity is broadly shared by all of our citizens,” Mr. Trump said at the White House. “We are drawing investment into neglected and underserved communities of America so that all Americans, regardless of Zip code, have access to the American Dream.”

White House officials said they hope the program will attract as much as $100 billion to those communities.

For too long, Mr. Trump said, economic development has been concentrated in certain large metropolitan areas.

“With the creation of today’s council, the resources of the whole federal government will be leveraged to rebuild low-income and impoverished neighborhoods that have been ignored by Washington in years past,” the president said.

Not sure what this really means, but it sounds like a move in the right direction.
Not expecting much success from this but any gains would be welcome. I'm sure some local governments will find a way to screw this up.

The market decided these communities stopped being worthy of investment and now we’re gonna go all egalitarian?
