A hole in one at my club costs you about $1000. You buy everyone at the club a drink and word spreads and people will actually come out to get a drink. I did that right before the shutdown when a buddy had one. If you have "insurance" you get about $700 from the club, but it comes in the form of golf shop credit, so you're still out the $1000 on your bill.

Japanese folks are crazy when it comes to HIO's. They buy all their friends gifts. When I was in the biz we had quite a few Japanese members and the normal gift was getting dozens and dozens of balls custom with their name and date of the HIO and they'd give out sleeves of balls. They always bought the most expensive ball Titleist would make (at that time Professionals), so it added up quickly.

However, we have a standing rule that if somebody gets a HIO in our regular Friday group, they get $50 from every one of our guys playing that day.

Another way to look at it would be it’s like expecting all your friends to pay for your 40th and 50th birthday celebration.

I made double eagle when I was 21, playing with a college teammate and two retired wheat farmers with a 6:30 am tee time.

It costs me something like $4.25 for a pitcher of bud light and was my introduction to AM Ale.
