No hypocrisy here at all.
While hundreds of thousands of federal workers go unpaid in the third week of the government shutdown, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has authorized the U.S. Coast Guard to spend $200 million on two Gulfstream G700 jets, a decision now drawing bipartisan outrage and questions about judgment and timing.

According to a congressional notification obtained by Bloomberg Government, Noem approved the Coast Guard’s request on October 15 to purchase the aircraft from Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation. The planes are intended to transport senior Department of Homeland Security officials and serve as airborne command posts. A separate presolicitation notice, posted October 9 on SAM.gov, had already indicated the department’s intent to pursue a sole-source deal—meaning a direct purchase from a single vendor without open bidding.

The potential contract—valued between $160 million and $200 million—lands at a politically volatile moment. With most federal spending frozen and workers missing paychecks, the image of a Cabinet-level agency preparing to acquire luxury-class aircraft has crystallized the divide between Washington’s leadership and its workforce.

trump saying he's not a King has a similar feeling to trump saying he didn't know what project 2025 was.

Except, you know, for the whole Constitution thing, the separation of powers, and the term limits imposed by the 22nd amendment (with an assist from the 12th as well). But yes, otherwise very similar.

We thought separation of powers would be a check to on him implementing much of Project 2025 but Congress rolled over like a beaten dog so I'm not counting on that one.

We'll see if 1) trump tries to get around those and 2) if he's able to. The big question is how does he use the military and how do they respond.

Maybe if we had a king back in 2003 we would have never gone to war with Iraq over something that was not true

Well, as for Congress, sure the GOP has gone along with him mostly, and the Dems have decided not having government is better than having one, hence the shutdown. There are elections a year from now so maybe we'll see Congress do something by then. But the Courts are doing just fine beating back the unlawful and unConstitutional things he's tried. The National Guard in LA surprised folks, but since then outside of DC he's been restricted in using National Guard (even the okay to use them in Portland is minor - its just to protect the federal building which we've already established is like one block big and on the outskirts of the city, i.e. not a big deal in terms of protest and likewise not a big deal in terms of National Guard use). And the military isn't coming into the US to do anything. You could see things around Venezuela and such, and hopefully Congress does weigh in on that. But remember, after the elections a year from now, the race for the Presidential election of 2028 starts in earnest. Trump will be older and nearing the end of his last term. There is an end to this where Trump walks away in 2029 (assuming his health gets him that far).

I hope you're right. I trust the systems that our founding fathers put in place. I don't trust trump and I don't trust his sycophants in Congress or the executive branch. I also don't trust thomas or alito.

We'll see if the National Guard restricts their activity to that block. I know that was the argument that the trump administration made in court but we've seen that what trump's people say in court and what they do in the real world are two different things so I don't think they will. I expect DHS to attempt to escalate things and for the Guard to spread out beyond that block in response.

FYI - the ICE facility in Portland is not on the outskirts of the city. It's about 2 miles south of the center of the city but it's still in an urban area and even has a Tesla dealership nearby.

Thomas is one judge. Heck, even Alito has staked clear ground away from him on most things. And 10 years from now even Thomas will be gone (earlier is even more likely).

Sure, it's still "urban", but just from a Portland definition of Portland. It's basically an old industrial park right next to an off ramp of I-5. That Tesla dealership looks like a weird addition to an otherwise sparse area.

Yes, it might be a little sparse there because it's sandwiched between the interstate and the Willamette River but if you go a couple blocks south of there you'll find shops, restaurants, bars and homes which means it's not on the "outskirts". I'm sure there are parts of Philly along the Schuylkill River that are sparse that aren't on the outskirts either.

The Laurel Hill Cemetery along the Schuylkill is quite sparse, graves excluded of course.

Isn't the government shut down? Where is the money coming from?

Has this been approved by the National Capital Planning Commission?

Have all of the appropriate rules, regulations and processes been followed?

For a guy who says he's not a king he sure likes to act like he can do whatever he wants regardless of what the rules or the law says.

Nope. None of it.

There’s a whole protocol to this and he’s completely ignoring it. We are lawless and MAGA is completely fine with it.

The East wing was added by FDR.

From PBS

No approval has been given.

Trump says the project will be paid for with private donations and that no public money will be spent on the ballroom. The White House promised to release information on which individuals and corporations have pledged or donated money and invited some of the donors to an East Room dinner last week, but has not released a comprehensive list and breakdown of funds.
