I've never had a Horchata, but I'll try it when I start weaning myself off of the keto. Just looked it up, that Horchata has like 21g of carbs - that's like my whole day of carbs in one drink. The unsweetened Almond/Cashew milk I'm drinking now is just 3g of carbs. I'm 4 lbs away from my goal of losing 27 lbs so the weaning off starts shortly.

Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize recreational marijuana in 2012. Several years later, doctors in Colorado and other states are expressing alarm over the increasing potency of cannabis and the health risks it may pose for young users — from psychiatric issues, including violent psychotic episodes, to the mysterious condition that plagued Gribbon.
The condition — officially called "cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome" but now known to health care workers as "scromiting," a mashup of "screaming" and "vomiting" — has popped up with increasing frequency at hospitals in Colorado, doctors say.

The dominoes are starting to fall in NC. A bill is currently in the legislature to legalize medical marijuana sales. And the Eastern Band of the Cherokee has approved the growing and sales of medical marijuana within the Qualla Boundary. I can see it now, busloads of old people going to Cherokee to gamble at the casino and pick up a bag of weed.

Re: DOJ Memo on Marijuana Use
https://www.wsj.com/articles/cannabis-i ... s-e8d1db54Cannabis Is Linked to Mental Illness
A major new study shows that people who abuse the drug are more likely to be diagnosed with depression and bipolar disorder.
….. Several studies have shown that chronic cannabis use is linked to a higher incidence of schizophrenia among men in their early 20s, the age when the disease is usually diagnosed. The first paper on the topic, a Swedish study published in 1997, found that heavy cannabis use was associated with a sixfold increase in schizophrenia risk. In the decades since, social scientists have unearthed a strong link between heavy cannabis use and other severe psychological illnesses, including clinical depression and bipolar disorder.
Now a new longitudinal study has examined the medical records of all citizens of Denmark over the age of 16, some 6.5 million people in all, for patterns of diagnosis, hospitalization and treatment for substance use between 1995 and 2021. In the paper, published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry in May, Dr. Oskar Hougaard Jefsen of Aarhus University and colleagues showed that people who had previously been diagnosed with cannabis use disorder were almost twice as likely to be diagnosed later with clinical depression. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cannabis use disorder is characterized by craving marijuana, using it more often than intended, spending a lot of time using it, and having it interfere with friends, family and work.
Even more dramatically, the paper also found that people with cannabis use disorder were up to four times as likely to be diagnosed later with bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms. As is true of many psychological disorders, the increased risk was higher in men than in women, and the more a person consumed, the greater the risk. The study did not distinguish between different forms and concentrations of cannabis.
Though the association was strong, the authors note that they can’t say for certain whether chronic and heavy cannabis use induces psychosis, or whether people prone to mental illness are more likely to be heavy users. It makes sense that people who feel the symptoms of incapacitating depression or mania, or who sense apparitions or voices only they can hear, might try to self-medicate with cannabis. Without a randomized controlled trial, which would be unethical in the extreme, it’s hard to untangle these strands definitively.….

Many drugs can have psychiatric side effects from antidepressants to nerve pain and seizure meds to booze (which is still FAR more culturally acceptable but more physically dangerous than weed) The self medication aspect, as the article mentioned, is rather obvious.
So what do we do with this information beyond warnings?

I think weed is similar to alcohol and tobacco and any other drug - probably isn't a good idea to do large quantities or frequent use of any of them. And kids should certainly be restricted from them, especially due to impact on growth and development. As for adults, the libertarian strain in me says have at it - it's a free country, do what you want to do as long as it doesn't hurt me (i.e. DUI with alcohol or weed, smoke in public spaces, etc).kalm wrote: ↑Thu Jul 06, 2023 1:29 pmDo you have a link to the study? That article is smack full of innuendo.

Yes, some of today’s weed is stronger. And yes, just like any drug, including alcohol or pain killers, its buyer beware.
On the whole, weed is still no more harmful physically or psychologically than beer. Do you think the two should be made illegal again?

Re: DOJ Memo on Marijuana Use
I get 89's point - there's been such a push to legalize marijuana (which I support) that there's also been an unsettling narrative that pot is harmless and just fun and that anyone who raises any point to the contrary is a reactionary (or square, as you teasingly refer to 89). But obviously, pot isn't necessarily safe, and it is particularly damaging to kids. I think as adults pot isn't all that much different than alcohol, but I don't think the same holds true for adolescents where pot is more dangerous. But in the rush to make money and in the rush to seem "with it" by being progressive and for legalizing pot, that kind of detail gets pushed to the side. I don't see the issue with trying to bring that to light.kalm wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 6:49 amThank you for confirming what a square you are!89Hen wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2023 10:37 am https://medicine.yale.edu/news-article/ ... lth-risks/

It’s a worthy discussion. 89’s take on weed often went beyond the points you raise. I found this article to be similar. Part of the issue has been weed’s federal designation as type 1 narcotic and the road blocks in place that limited research.GannonFan wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:15 amI get 89's point - there's been such a push to legalize marijuana (which I support) that there's also been an unsettling narrative that pot is harmless and just fun and that anyone who raises any point to the contrary is a reactionary (or square, as you teasingly refer to 89). If 89 is coming at this now from a pro-legalization but let’s be aware of the hazards, I have no disagreement. It’s just been disingenuous to not consider weed on a level playing field compared to booze, pain meds, and psychotropic drugs.
EG: I found out after I was placed on gabapentin for neuropathic pain how serious side effects and withdrawal symptoms can be for some (I happen to fine on it but I’m on a low dosage). They dish out prescriptions like candy including to adolescents…but weed bad!

Well, I think the proper response to the massive problem of over-prescriptions and the abuse/addiction of things like opium-based drugs would be to push back against that and limit prescriptions and such. I don't think the best path is to say "hell, if we're doing that, let's make everything legal!". If we want to make marijuana legal (and again, I'm fine with that approach) it should be on its own merits with its own drawbacks. Not because we've screwed up on other stuff.kalm wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:28 amIt’s a worthy discussion. 89’s take on weed often went beyond the points you raise. We wouldn’t be having this discussion about booze.
