Tammy Duckworth, grilling President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for defense secretary over whether he had the “breadth and depth of knowledge” needed to lead international negotiations, asked Pete Hegseth if could name one member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, describe what type of agreement the U.S. had with the countries and how many nations were in the bloc.

Hegseth responded at the heated Senate confirmation hearing that he couldn’t tell Duckworth the exact number of ASEAN nations, but that “I know we have allies in South Korea and Japan in AUKUS (a pact between Australia, the United Kingdom and the U.S.) with Australia.”

“None of those three countries are in ASEAN,” responded Duckworth, a Democrat from Illinois. “I suggest you do a little homework.”

I know what ASEAN is because I majored in political science and took a lot of international relations classes. That was 36+ years ago and I still remember.

It's important for hegsweth to know what ASEAN is and who's a member because of who their members are connected to (US, China, etc.), the role they can play because of those broad connections and their strategic location. The South China Sea is an important hotspot and potential flashpoint for a major war. You'd have to have your head stuck in the sand to know a little about the territorial conflict happening there.

The fact that hegsweth didn't know ASEAN members is concerning. It's fair to ask if he's starting the job ill-prepared and behind.

There are good things (including military morale and recruiting) about a trump Presidency but it's a package deal and we get the good with the bad.

The bad is not insignificant. His narcissism and disregard for the Constitution are problems as is his affinity for brutal dictators over longtime allies.
