 My agenda is to argue politics.

Both ideological extremes can lead to a reduction in liberty and a wealth gap. Or do you really think the aristocracy in feudal europe were a bunch of collectivists?

I believe in a strong middle class. Partly because that's where I was raised, partly because those are my current customers, and mostly because that is what's best for the country and my children's future. We have gone through one of the most extended periods of financial deregulation, low taxes, supply side economics in the history of our country. We have swung wildly toward the "free market" side of the ideological coin. How is the middle class doing? :coffee:
Your argument has failed

We haven't had a free market. A free market would be, for lack of a better term, "free" of such government entities such as the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve is destroying the middle class with its inflation. The inflation, however, makes it easier for the government to spend money instead of raising taxes and borrowing money. I can go on and on about how the Federal Reserve and the welfare state is responsible for most of our economic troubles, but I see that Baldy tried to scratch the surface earlier and simply put, you're allergic to facts. :ohno:

Funny how the audit of the Fed part of the financial reform bill was put in there by Senator Bernie Sanders - a Democratic Socialist. :o

I too am very skeptical of the Fed, but it's not the end all be all for financial problems. And I agree that we haven't had a free market - and thank God. We are a mixed economy that has swung wildly toward the neo-liberal side of the economic equation to our detriment. The best example of a free market is Somalia - perhaps you should go live there. :thumb:

As for your comment on facts, you need to understand the difference between those and opinions or theories. I will be more than happy to consider your facts when you and your new BFF come up with some meaningful ones.

I have no idea about the current state of inflation, however the current value of the dollar is 4% of what it was in 1913, the year the Federal Reserve System was put in place.

um...No, I was speaking in terms of actual numbers--See I have a life, I'm not wasting my time looking that up. You can expect the value of the dollar to nose dive as long as the Fed exists and as long as we increase spending without increasing taxes.

edit: for you, the CPI

Thanks kid, you're a gem. I keep stressing real estate over the rigged game on Wall Street but nobody seems to agree. Glad you see it too, I may save you a place at the compound, bring gold.

yep, too bad you missed out on America, you would have loved it. Never was anything else like it, never will be.

The best example of a free market is Somalia? Either that was a bad joke or you are much more ignorant than I thought. :ohno:

The most open economy in the world and the best example of a free market is Hong Kong. Their system of positive non-interventionism has made it the less regulated, lowest taxed, and most open economy in the world. There is no sales tax, no VAT, no capital gains taxes, the lowest personal income taxes of any developed entity in the world, and one of the lowest corporate income rates on the planet.

No economic system is without its warts, but the only system in which people have been able to pull themselves out of poverty and make better lives for themselves has been in capitalistic free enterprise systems. The people in the world who are worse off are in societies who differ from it...Sub-Saharan Africa (Somalia anyone?), many countries in the Middle East, Cuba, Venezuela, etc, etc, etc. Debate it if you wish, but history has proven there has been no other economic system developed that has been able to improve the life of ordinary (middle class) people than an open capitalistic free enterprise economic system.

I guess that explains 35 years of a shrinking American middle class.

Myth: BUSTED

Fair to Middling in the Middle Class

To hear it from Democratic leaders and presidential candidates, you'd think the American dream was melting away as quickly as the glacial ice floes in Greenland.

We all know the strands that are woven together to create this story of the disappearing middle class. The stagnant wages. The disappearance of hundreds of thousands of unionized jobs in the auto, steel and airline industries. The excessive salaries earned by chief executives, investment bankers and managers of private-equity and hedge funds. The mass layoffs, and cutbacks in health and pension benefits. The declining faith that our children will live better than we do.

There is a large kernel of truth in all of this, but as economist Stephen Rose points out in a provocative new monograph, rumors of the demise of the American middle class are greatly exaggerated. In fact, living standards for most Americans are improving. Not everyone is flipping hamburgers or working at Wal-Mart. To the degree that the middle class is shrinking, it is because more people are rising out of it than falling from it.

Rose is not your standard-issue conservative market apologist -- far from it. He left medical school to get his PhD in economics, then alternated between teaching and community organizing. He served on the Democratic staff of the Joint Economic Committee and in the economics shop of the Clinton Labor Department. Along the way, he's worked for a couple of think tanks and blue-ribbon commissions.

Thanks for playing. :coffee:

Yes, perhaps, but obviously backed up by an extensive and well considered reading list. Anybody (e.g., skelly) can pick numbers off of the internet, but only a few are able to make a cogent and well informed case for a point of view.
