Having spent some time there in '96 and again in '98, it was the RARE South Korean who wanted US troops in-country on a permanent basis. :coffee: :coffee:
The Koreans who are pro-American are far less vocal than those who aren't.
I encountered plenty of pro-American Koreans in my three assignments there.

However, many pro-American Koreans would NOT like our stay to be permanent.

I really don't see any reason for us to maintain ground forces in Korea now. Air Force units might be a different matter, but the Army units now are nothing more than cannon fodder.

Yup. Our forces serve in part as a tripwire on the DMZ. Let the Koreans themselves serve that purpose. Aside from legitimate defense concerns, the main reason they still want us in country are the mandatory Korean support jobs paid for by the American taxpayer. :ohno:

The South Koreans are strong, capable and resourceful. I believe they can withstand pressure from the North Koreans. My only reluctance in supporting a complete withdrawal is doubt that the South Koreans can withstand Chinese pressure.

After all, the ONLY reason North Korea exists is that China desires it as a foil and distraction to American power in the Pacific.

You've already reached the bottom of a bottomless pit. Now you're digging even lower.
