the vast majority of Americans like their guns (I like mine) and they aren't giving them up

the NRA simply reminds people who is good on guns and who is bad

case in point - with absolutely no help from the NRA, Hillary Clinton did more damage to her chances than the email scandal by praising the Aussie gun grab- she cannot gain any votes from her dbackjon base doing that- she only loses independents

The NRA could be run so much more intelligently (Frankly) and they mostly trip over their own dicks
but all -in-all they are like just every single issue organization
in that their sincerest followers are nut balls

We had a huge problem with highway fatalities. We instituted some smart laws - like safety standards, seatbelt laws, etc.

Highway fatalities have fallen ever since.

No one is saying that we eliminated highway fatalities. It's not a reasonable goal. Simply reducing highway fatalities was the goal and it was successful.

And, similarly, no one is saying that we can eliminate gun deaths.

But, refusing to do anything. Or saying the problem can be solved with "more guns" is frighteningly stupid.

More guns in the hands of the right people is not frighteningly stupid. Disarming the American public would be frighteningly stupid. It was important enough to be the second most important thing to the guys who wrote the Constitution. Number one was to be able to tell the Government it's wrong when it's wrong, and number two was to be able to overthrow it if it won't get right. Make no mistake about the intention of the Second Amendment. It was meant to allow the overthrow of the standing armies of the federal government should the federal government return to tyranny. Allowing individuals to defend themselves and their families from violent criminals is a nice secondary benefit.
