Are those stations where the Habib that bought it from Hess is too lazy to put up his own signs?

I think it is a 3 year process that hasn't hit MD yet.

Yeah. Hess sold out to Marathon. Marathon is rebranding the stations to Speedway. Delaware stations are done with that conversion, at least Slower DE anyway.

CAA Flagship wrote:It's a small amount. Probably around 8 to 10 cents per gallon. But that cost is offset by state taxes that factor in the number of jobs that more than 3300 statewide gas stations provide. And proof of this is comparing the price of gas to neighboring states.
:suspicious:

What do you mean that the cost is offset by jobs?

Suppose everyone uses 15 gallons of gas per week. That would be a $1.50 tax per person per week.

By your logic, if we simply tax everyone $1.50 per week, we could create jobs for 3,300 businesses. So, why not tax everyone $15 per week and fund 33,000 businesses? Tax everyone $150 per week and the state could provide jobs for 330,000 businesses.

You are a genius!!! Let's tax everyone $1,500 per week and we'd create jobs for 3,300,000 businesses!!!!

And with that success, we should tax everyone $11,500 per week and there would be millions of new businesses!!!

Woo-hoo! With that many businesses, more people would have jobs that could pay for the taxes. We don't need private businesses...we just need more taxes and the businesses, and jobs, will follow!!!

 :tothehand: :dunce:
First, I worded that incorrectly. You caught that. I meant to say "partially offset". It's a minimal offset if you look at it from state income taxes as these jobs are low income jobs, but keeping people employed can save a lot when it comes to things like unemployment payments.
Robert Scott III, an economics professor at Monmouth State University, took a deep dive into New Jersey's self-service gas ban in a 2007 paper titled "Fill 'er Up: A Study of Statewide Self-Service Gasoline Station Bans." His research looked at the costs associated with self-serve bans in New Jersey and Oregon, the only other state with a similar law.

"I really expected to see that there would be a significant cost," Scott told NJ.com. "But you add all these jobs with almost no expense."

Another factor that lowers the cost to consumers is liability insurance that the gas station carries. It is generally lower for stations that have "trained" attendants (also known as Petroleum Transfer Engineers :kisswink: ). That reduced cost to the station helps pay for the wages as well.

I don't know the exact cost to consumer because there are so many factors that are working together, but let's say it is 5 cents per gallon. It's not like you get nothing for it. You get to not pump your own gas.

I would happily pump my own gas if it meant saving 5 cents per gallon. :coffee:

If I cared either way whether or not I save or spend, at most, 90 cents at 5 cents per gallon to fill my tank, then I've done something seriously wrong in my life and would probably be the one working at the gas station pumping everyone else's gas.

Meh. Depends on the weather. There are times it would be well worth it.

Another "benefit" is for handicapped people. I rarely notice this but about two weeks ago, I saw a guy come out of a van in a wheelchair to pump his gas. At the time I noticed, the customer next to him help him do it.
Now, a full service option at self service station would solve that but those are becoming increasingly scarce. And I don't know if it would meet ADA rules to charge them extra.

And another benefit is safety. Having an attendant outside at all times provides a safer feeling environment from thieves and carjackers.

FBI agents were analyzing cellphone data to determine whether two men charged with robbing a gas station, carjacking a family and then holding them hostage during a police chase in Missoula committed other armed robberies, according to a recently signed search warrant.
