My closest evangelical pal is my wife. She resigned her position as a State Republican Central Committee member, a position she worked very hard to gain, because the Republican Party nominated Trump. She also changed her voter registration from Republican to independent.

My next closest evangelical pals are my son and daughter. Neither of them voted for Trump and both are horrified by the fact that so many evangelicals did.

Other then them I don't think I have too many evangelical pals. So from my standpoint my own evangelical pals conducted themselves with integrity. They are not hypocrites.

It's not because of me either. They are all independent thinkers who make up their own minds about things. Disagree with me on many things. I am very proud of all of them, especially given the phenomenon whereby so many Evangelical Christians and/or Conservatives completely threw all sense of integrity and principle out the window during the 2016 election season.
Your family is principled. Seems like many evangelical leaders are too:

Still, 80% of evangelicals voted for Trump.

And the next in line to the presidency is an evangelical who tacitly condones Trump. Would you guys support Pence?

Evangelicals are followers by nature, which is why they keep sending money to thieving preachers.

I think it's ROFL funny how the trumplets turned on Comey, the very symbol of law and order in the USA. Now he's predator but when he's after a female candidate or a black President he was the Gospel personified.

This is beginning to exceed my wildest expectations for entertainment value.

I certainly wouldn't and I don't think my wife or either of my children would either. As far as I'm concerned Pence destroyed his credibility by aligning himself with Trump. And based on family discussions we've had I think my wife and two children feel the same way.

My wife, the former passionate Republican, pretty much feels that way about the entire Republican Party. After decades of working very hard for it she now wants no part of it.

John,
There's the George Will (and Ivy) Republicans that are a worthy investment of your energy
The one problem you'll have with them is...
They don't want Jesus to be the Senate house Majority leader

But other than that
they tend to be the most logical - reasonable - well considered strategists in Politics

If I were You I'd write George a letter (if it's well written he'll respond)
And ask him "What's the next move" for a Conservative American that despises Trump...

There is no next move for conservatives, other than to watch Conservatism be conflated with Trump for the next 50 years

(in much the same way Islam is conflated with race)

When we look back, we will see that Trump did more for the long view liberal agenda than any Barack Obama or Nancy Pelosi could have ever dreamed

I look forward to and embrace the NEXT MOVE coming from real and thoughtful Conservatives...
and I hope it doesn't include pandering to Trumps buffoonery and lunatic fringe

As much as I'd like to see a Liberal movement that distances itself from Black Lives Matter
and college campus knee jerks

Yawn. Liberals have always thought Will was just a crank that thinks using big words makes his wrong opinions more valid or correct. When he leaves all of the sudden they pretend they have some level of respect for him as a pundit.

Just like they only care what William F Buckley had to say when he was criticizing George Dubya late in his life.

He could not have left the Republican party, he was never a Republican.

He is a self proclaimed "libertarian" (even though he never actually supported real libertarian candidates).

I have never actually valued his opinion. Like most of the journalists today he "appeared" to be a bought and paid for mouth piece of the power elites.

No real loss. .

Any person who was a Republican with an actual brain would've left the Republican Party when the Republican Party decided to go with Trump.

I'm a liberal and I respected Will's views long before he left the party. Same with Buckley going back to what he was saying in the 60's.

Actually the republican party has never really supported president trump. There were many democrat union people, conservative people, libertarian people, independent people, as well as true republicans.

A person would think that you would tire of these redundant posts, proclaiming to be a reformed republican because of the election ... it is your business .. but when you have these non stop attempts to sway opinons over the results of an election that didn't go your way ... well ... anyway .... it is your business.

Agree with this assessment on the end of an era for the old guard...

On the D side, its the same assessment that concluded that JFK would not be part of the Democratic Party today...the old guard died out on that side too...

Right now, most people who are leaning conservative or leaning liberal are stuck with the established parties...neither of which represent us today...

How much longer can these establishments (RNC and DNC) last?

As long as they write the rules that guarantee their hegemony?

Forever

Edit: the problem is that ours in a parliamentarian system in the political arena but not in government itself. So instead of having to build coalitions and make compromises within the legislature itself, those coalitions are made internally, in the parties themselves. So we wind up with the hard religious anti abortion crowd aligned with libertarian minded conservatives, and hardcore feminists aligned with Islam apologists

The two parties are actually coalitions of what would be 8 parties in the UK

You are completely ignorant of George Will
and yet you type words about him anyway... (that's odd)

Regardless of your agreement or disagreement with Mr. Will

on a political basis
George never constructed a flimsy argument
was able to back up virtually everything he said
He always understood both sides of the debate at hand
He has zero tolerance for buffoons and poorly constructed notions

He criticizes O'reilly and Hannity on very specific arguments
and for their blind support and stupidity
Not for being conservative

George Will is precisely what BOTH PARTIES need MORE of not less

Oh, I am sure we have "more" than enough political hacks writing articles with the sole purpose of swaying the opinions of others, instead of throwing out facts and letting others make up their own mind.
That actually is what they are paid to do, sway opinions.
He has zero tolerance of those whose opinions he can't sway, no difference from the other political hacks out there.

I have no time for hannity or O'Reilly so that is a moot point. If you show me articles supporting independent thinking as exhibited by either rand paul or ron paul then I will change my view about him ... I don't believe articles like that exist from any political hacks much less him.

Neither party needs more political parrots that find more ways to spread the same political nonsense.

This country needs MORE "independent" thought that points out the destructive policies which are being implimented by BOTH parties.
