I'd say that if you left "Neoliberalism is" out of that paragraph, read it to someone, and asked them to identify the political philosophy involved most people would say "conservatism." Another interesting quote from the article is this:Neoliberalism is a policy model—bridging politics, social studies, and economics—that seeks to transfer control of economic factors to the private sector from the public sector. It tends towards free-market capitalism and away from government spending, regulation, and public ownership.
So Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher were neoliberals? I somebody needs to come up with a term to describe the "policy model" that does not include the word "liberal."Often identified in the 1980s with the conservative governments of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan...
Neoliberalism FTW!

I agree on the importance of freedom. But we’re also not the most upwardly mobile country on earth. It’s also not as if countries with tighter regulation aren’t desirable to immigrants. Again...we can have both. It’s simply an argument of degrees.Ivytalk wrote:To me, the flow of human capital is determinative of this question. Despite currently restrictionist policies, the USA still attracts far more immigrants than any other country. And they don’t come here because of cleaner air, workplace safety regulations, healthcare systems, or Dodd-Frank. They come here because of a combination of economic opportunity and political freedom. According to a June 2019 Pew Research study, the chief suppliers of immigrants are Mexico (duh), China, India, the Philippines, and El Salvador. All of those countries score lower than the US on the Heritage Index of Economic Freedom, which measures 12 factors grouped underthe principal rubrics of the Rule of law, government size , regulatory efficiency, and open markets. Some regulated economies like China and Vietnam have higher growth rates, but economic freedom does not correlate perfectly to growth rates (although there is a general correlation). People are attracted to opportunity, and regulation tends to inhibit that opportunity.

You’ve been conditioned to think liberal equates to terms like “socialism”, “statism”, “command economy”.
The father of capitalism was an OG liberal.

So here's round two. Did communism really save capitalism in the 20th century? Does it need saving again?
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... y2zLKwJI_I
Whether it was the space race or huge European trade unions with links to Moscow, a spectre was haunting the west: the spectre of egalitarianism. In a new study of 16 industrial countries during the cold war, Brazilian economists André Albuquerque Sant’Anna and Leonardo Weller argue that the “more national elites were under the threat of communist revolution, the more the state introduced policies that reduced top income shares” – whether that be taxing and spending more, or allowing uncomfortably powerful trade unions. Those reds under the bed helped ensure you would have social democracy at home.
Communism was not the sole shackle on capitalism – but it is one that typically gets painted out of history. Yet as the late Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm observed in his memoir Interesting Times, even in the 80s when the Soviet bloc was ailing and feeble, it could still “frighten the rich and the rulers of the world into taking some notice of the needs of the poor”.
Almost all such counterweights to extreme capitalism have disappeared today, from strong trade unions to alternative national models. The resulting debauchery is all around us, from the companies that shovel money towards their shareholders while sending their workers to food banks, to the billionaires now preparing to run for US president, to the major capitals (such as London) that ask barely any questions of passing kleptocrats but instead sell them anything they want.
Countervailing forces made capitalism not only more bearable for those living under it but also more likely to survive. Without them, the system loses both consent and even the will to carry on. The banking crash, Brexit, the impending climate catastrophe – all should serve as distress signals for keen-eared capitalists, yet the answer to each is to serve up more of the same: more finance, more slash-and-burn, more tokenism around carrier bags

I'm sure this guy has written his thoughts down somewhere. I'd be intrigued if he offered any innovative solutions to the flaws in free market capitalism (of course they exist) .... solutions that do not involve artificial tampering with economies, such as government picking winners and losers. Otherwise, I'm happy with the flaws given the alternatives.
And believe it or not, I'm a VERY anti-trust kind of guy (so I'm not a full on Libertarian free marketeer)... so if that's on his menu I'd be inclined to agree. And I'd be completely consistent with what I said above about winners and losers.

You’re so butthurt over your ill informed beliefs being laughed at, you have to go back and find a thread from 6 years ago where you think I got owned?
Without re-reading the thread I’m quite confident in my takes here. Even MAGA has tried to reject neo-liberalism.
Thank you for the good laugh this morning, CH!
