But, of course, saw WWII coming and put us in position to win that war, defeat Nazism and imperial Japan, and be placed to be the greatest superpower in the world for the next century. So all in all, that's a count on the plus side, no? :coffee:
That's a hell of a statement. One I've never heard/read about FDR....in fact usually the opposite.
Really? If you read many of his speeches during his early campaigns and look at his correspondence with Churchill, he was well aware that war was coming but knew that Americans had no stomach for it. I thought that was common knowledge.

Agreed, FDR's problem was how to sell the war to the rest of the nation. It took several years and ultimately Pearl Harbor for that to happen.

That's 'cause I actually believe in an efficient, small government that works for the people. Time and time again, people confuse my prioritization of social programs with "big" government, when big government is actually bloat from defense contractors, lobbyists, and corporations inserting themselves into policy. EPA =/= big government. Patriot Act = big government. ACA =/= big government. Citizens United = big government.

Firstly
It's no secret that The Citadel (as a historical body) has a deep resentment of all things Lincoln
Secondly
I read your president list previously and noted Lincoln on there
thirdly
That inspired me to take a cheap shot at you

I can only speak for what I've experienced. The top 5 of my lifetime are:

Reagan
Kennedy
H.W. Bush
Clinton
Obama

And BTW the reason Kennedy ranks where he does is the Cuban Missile Crisis. That was some serious shit.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Yeah, to his credit, the US military began a major ramp up mid-late 1940, including instituting the draft..

Madison is a good choice. I’ve soften my position on Lincoln as I’ve learned more about him. Having to decide to fight a civil war couldn’t have been easy. He got a raw deal starting out, Like Dubya, but I think he did the best he could.

Cocaine was medicinal. When FDRs medical records were unsealed, it was discovered that his doctor was administering it quite often.

That and his condition was more likely to be Guillan-Barre Syndrome and not polio. Pop

So who's "the mouse" in your scenario..?

Also based on your detailed description of the situation
we can presume there was an "easier way" to have the 3.2 million enslaved human properties set free..?

I'm not a Madison guy. First of all, I think it's a gave misnomer to call him the Father of the Constitution - Father of the Bill of Rights, absolutely, but the Constitution we ended up with ended up not having most of the stuff he thought was critical to have in the Constitution in the first place. Calling him the Father of the Constitution is just lazy and inaccurate. As for his Presidency, he stumbled into the War of 1812, he ended up stealing from Hamilton's idea, one that he opposed bitterly, and rechartered the National Bank (which Jackson would later so dramatically kill off years later), and he kept perpetuating the original Washington DC bubble/swamp that made politics and government isolated from the rest of the country and led directly to the splintering of the Democratic-Republicans and the rise of the Jacksonian Democratic party that would live on from there.
