Does this suggest then that California has less power in the electoral college? How many votes do they get compared to say Montana? Oh, so the power difference is the same? Got it.BDKJMU wrote:

Without the EC the higher population in California means they hold more sway than in Montana. With the EC the higher population in California means they hold more sway than in Montana. It doesn't make any difference. We have 3 electoral votes they have 55. So if we use the EC California's vote is of more importance. If we got rid of the EC then their huge population means they have more importance. People talk about how each person's vote would have more weight in a lower population state but that doesn't matter at all. With or without the EC the vote is determined by the higher population centers.BDKJMU wrote:What are you babbling about?Vidav wrote:

Well from Montana's point of view, yes. But you can add all the other 3 electoral vote states as well...Vidav wrote:Without the EC the higher population in California means they hold more sway than in Montana. ...but with a popular vote setup you can also write off every state not named CA, TX, FL, and NY. I mean how do you not understand that from the pic?

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the EC.Vidav wrote:Without the EC the higher population in California means they hold more sway than in Montana. With it, national politicians only have to appeal to urban centers... ONLY.
With the EC you cannot just win the urban centers and win the election. You have to appeal to the less populous states as a bloc, as well.
Exactly as it was intended

You don't have to appeal to the less populous states. Just the "swing states".
