Man, this is a slippery slope. I get that it’s only targeted at the super rich, but once an idea like this gets ahold, it eventually and inevitably will wind up trickling down lower and lower on the income scale. Targeting UNREALIZED gains…..very, very bad idea. What happens when unrealized gains become unrealized losses?
Fair point but the US is not economically sustainable under neoliberalism. No one wants to pay more taxes, but for better or worse one group is better positioned to without it affecting their standard of living.
The extra taxes they would garner will be like pissing in the wind. You can count on this: eventually, if you are an individual that has ANY sort of investment portfolio that has unrealized gains, an idea like this will apply to you as well. And that’ll probably include unrealized gains on property. Once they get their hands on this money, there’ll be no turning back.

Yep. One of my biggest fears is that they will start means testing Roth IRA gains. They are going to see all that untaxable wealth and change the rules. If you are "rich' you'll have to pay tax on it.

It’s just like the idea they floated this year about getting access to every transaction that goes through your bank account…ostensibly to track those who are making income from sources they can’t track…in small bits and pieces. When there was blowback at the $600 figure, they said “fine, what if we raise it to $10,000?” It DOESN’T. FUCKING. MATTER. What the dollar amount is. HARD STOP. If that EVER gets implemented, even if it’s $1,000,000 threshold, it will eventually be lowered to a number that is worse and worse and worse off for the middle class and those barely scraping by, with tip money, cash payments, etc., etc. Once they normalize the concept, the $ will get continually worse. It’s what they do.

Lol. Blaming EVERYTHING but “going woke”, when the answer is really, really simple.
It may sound like a Roland Emmerich sci-fi movie, but it’s actually more frightening. And much more controversial. It’s the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s latest initiative to make Hollywood more equitable and diverse—more woke—by changing the rules by which films are eligible for Best Picture nominations. Here’s how it works: Starting in 2024, producers will be required to submit a summation of the race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability status of members of their movie’s cast and crew. If a particular movie does not have enough people of color or disabled people or gays or lesbians working on the set—and what is “enough” will be determined by a knotty tangle of byzantine formularies—then that movie will no longer be eligible for an Oscar.

Not surprisingly, the plan is not being universally applauded in Hollywood. Critics say it’s invasive, anticreative, opens the door to privacy issues, and is spectacularly unfair to actors and crew members, who may want to keep their sexual orientation or health profiles to themselves, not to mention to producers and directors who have enough to worry about while shooting a movie than to be saddled with the thankless task of tallying up the identity markers of their creative partners.

“I mean, why aren’t animals in this?” sneers one industry insider. “What if the main character is a horse?”

Heather Wilhelm-Routenberg said she would only have kids with her wife Robin (Robbie) Routenberg-Wilhelm if they could have girls — because Heather was still traumatized from being sexually assaulted on two different occasions after college. Heather and Robbie say that CNY fertility clinic in Latham, NY, assured the Buffalo couple it would not be a problem: The lab could determine the sex of any embryo, created using an egg from Robbie and donor sperm, before it was transferred into Heather.

But when Heather was 15 weeks pregnant — having been assured by the clinic that the embryo was female, she says — they found out she was carrying a boy. The news sent her into a dark depression. After their son’s birth in December 2020, Heather became suicidal and wasn’t able to bond with the baby. Now, with the help of Eric Wrubel of Warshaw Burstein, LLP, Heather and Robbie are suing CNY on 11 counts including breach of contract, medical malpractice and battery. Here, Heather tells AMY KLEIN how much she loves her son and what it’s like to have a pregnancy and new motherhood that traumatizes you
.
We scheduled an ultrasound for the next day. That was the worst night of my life. I had this overwhelming sense of immobility. I remember lying in my bedroom, thinking, “This can’t be happening!” Not only was the baby in my body not ours, but the baby in my body was male and he was put there against my will, just like rape.

I'm going to unleash my inner kalm here for a moment.

Here's one simple refutation to the argument an advantage of letting billionaires keep more of their money is that they know better where to invest their money to spur innovation. They put their money to stupid stuff like this.

Did these people play with blocks as a child and know how unstable they get once they get stacked beyond a certain height? Not to mention you can't just let let the blocks free fall so that you get as much energy from them as you can.

They certainly don’t drive the economy like many think. They arrange it and warp it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not sure how someone with that mindset could raise a healthy child even if it was a girl. The child is going to interact with and have male friends and might want to date males at some point in their lives. How would this parent handle that? And if they tried to avoid it by forcing their child to be gay, how would that be different from what straight parents have done for centuries?

I'm still having issues reconciling that she is really angry that a technology allowing her to have a child she could not have outside this technology, was unfortunately the wrong sex. And then to allow that dismay be published for that child to see someday.

Just no.

Fox Nation’s Lara Logan Suggests Theory of Evolution Is a Hoax Funded by Jews
“Does anyone know who employed Darwin, where Darwinism comes from?” Logan, now with Fox News’ streaming service Fox Nation, asked. “Look it up: The Rothschilds. It goes back to 10 Downing Street. The same people who employed Darwin, and his theory of evolution and so on and so on. I’m not saying that none of that is true. I’m just saying Darwin was hired by someone to come up with a theory — based on evidence, OK, fine.”
WTF! How fvcking far out there in cloud cuckoo conspiracy land can someone be?

Bwahaha! MIT bringing back the ACT/SAT.

Pretty easy to read between the lines. The new kids couldn't do the math. MIT requires everyone to take a year of Calculus and a year of Calculus based Physics.

Bill Maher’s stand on progressivism is encouraging, but he’s missing this key point
Maher has figured out that progressives’ desire to control everything not only doesn’t work but also dooms the politicians pushing it. But he’s missing an important piece of the puzzle: local politics.
...
“I don’t really get that much into local politics,” he said when Carolla asked him about the candidates for Los Angeles mayor. “I don’t know how much it really is going to affect me.”

Maher’s work requires him to focus on national issues, of course. And he acknowledged that if he did pay more attention to his backyard, “I’m sure I’d be a better citizen.”

But he’s like so many voters: Turning his focus to the frustrations and pettiness of national politics while ignoring the daily effect the city, county and school district have on our lives.
Disappointed in Maher on this one but at least he realizes that he should be more focused on local politics. Too many people focus on DC and don't realize how much local politics impacts our everyday lives.

Yup.

Though I have seen more local involvement over the last few years than ever before. School board and city council stupidity has seen to that. And have debated running for local city council or township board in my new location.
