After reading from the suspect's web postings he said: "We know this guy had a problem with the direction the government is going. We know he had a problem with what was going on in District 8. We know he had a problem with people who couldn't speak 'english grammar.' What we don't know is why no one picked up on this guy until a tragedy occurred."

I expect the batphone is ringing off the hook and Roger Ailes is pissed.

I don't think the Fed or anyone has enough resources to tail everyone who fits these descriptions.

I'll say this - until all the facts come out any casting of blame is dangerously premature.

That being said, those of us who work in the political business have been talking about something like this happening for a couple of years. As the tea party movement got louder and angrier, and as politicians exploited that fear and anger for their own gains, we often wondered how long it would take for someone to "take direct action". It's a real fear of staffers, and my buddy who works for Giffords and I talked not long ago about just such a thing... he thought Rep. Grijalva was a more likely target given the vitriol directed his way.

We don't yet know what motivated this guy - and I won't go casting blame, but I mention the above only because the conversation seems relevant in light of today's event.

There are no words - I'm sick to my stomach - this is the worst nightmare of anyone working in politics - no matter the reason.

Again, I'll reserve judgment until all the facts are out - and I'd encourage others to do the same... jumping to conclusions and acting and speaking rashly right now is dangerous and foolish.

My daughter just turned ten. That could have been her. What kind of fucking world do we live in that people get so upset and angry over such unimportant shit? I'm not a believer, but those of you who are should be on your knees praying for these people. I know I will be doing some pretty hard self examination over the next day or two. Those poor people.

I'm not sure it shouldn't. And this is coming from a guy who owns lots of guns, etc. But there comes a point when we need to admit that not everyone needs to have easy unfettered access to guns. The only problem with limits is that crazy people and criminals will find a means to accomplish their evil deeds. Where there is a will there is a way. Sad.

The killing of U.S. District Judge John M. Roll comes two years after he received death threats while he presided over a $32 million civil-rights lawsuit filed by illegal immigrants against an Arizona rancher.

When Roll ruled the case could go forward, U.S. Marshal David Gonzales said in 2009 that talk-radio shows cranked up the controversy and spurred audiences into making threats.

In one afternoon, Roll logged more than 200 phone calls. Callers threatened the judge and his family. They posted personal information about Roll online.

"They said, 'We should kill him. He should be dead,'" Gonzales said.

In an interview with The Arizona Republic in mid-2009, Roll, who was the chief federal judge in Arizona, said both he and his wife were given a protection detail for about a month.

"It was unnerving and invasive. ... By its nature it has to be," Roll said, adding that they were encouraged to live their lives as normally as possible. "It was handled very professionally by the Marshals Service."

At the end of the month, Roll said four key men had been identified as threat makers.

The Marshals Service left to him the decision to press charges but recommended against it. Roll said he had no qualms about following their advice.

The recommendation was based on the intent of those making the threats.

"I have a very strong belief that there is nothing wrong with criticizing a judicial decision," he said. "But when it comes to threats, that is an entirely different matter."

Roll started his legal career as a bailiff in the Pima County Superior Court. He served an assistant city attorney in Tucson and worked as a criminal prosecutor in Pima County before joining the U.S. Attorney's office in 1980, where he specialized in prosecuting drug cases.

He was appointed to the Arizona Appeals Court in 1987 and served until he was named to the federal bench by President George H. W. Bush in 1991.

He began serving as presiding judge in 2006.
