A light pickup truck would be fine for my purposes. I had a Ford Ranger that I put more than 240,000 miles on and it came in handy all the time. All I need is something to haul a few things from time to time and carry my kayak. Stuff like dirt, Christmas trees, pine straw for the garden, pieces of furniture. Having a pickup truck just for stuff like that makes life more convenient.Light pick up trucks are useless,

I wouldn't buy one right now but some people would. And they'll eventually get the range up to a point where I would consider one if I'm still alive at that point. And if I were someone who thought the range is sufficient I'm also someone who thinks that if I am only going to have one vehicle it's got to be a pickup truck.93henfan wrote:Why? So you can bitch about not being able to haul lumber 400 miles?JohnStOnge wrote:They need to make a pickup truck.
Pickup trucks are popular vehicles. Seems like if people want to make electric vehicles thinking about making pickup trucks would makes sense. If not Tesla then somebody.
Here's a list of the top 10 best selling vehicles of 2015 as of around the middle of that year:
http://www.kbb.com/car-reviews-and-news ... 0012241-1/
The top 3 are pickup trucks. Here's a list for just the month of March 2016:
https://www.cars.com/articles/top-10-be ... 684271688/
Same top 3.
Why would someone NOT think of trying to make electric pickup trucks? I've got to believe somebody is because pickup trucks are obviously in high demand.

John,
Use your type II thinking for a minute...
Sometimes I really wonder if you're this dumb or just a master troll
Everybody knows trucks sell
but that is hardly the point
So ponder this for just a few seconds
Electric cars are hard to make
and they are expensive to make
and they need to be small-ish due to weight
and they have a more limited potential buyer audience
Typically short range city folk
or people who are interested in a -very specific- secondary vehicle
add all of that up - and you come up with "Build an electric Pick-up truck"
Sweet bald headed baby jeezus John...

You might as well have just said "Build an electric space ship"
because thats about as useful a conversation

Now wait a second. You're the one who's been touting all the virtues of electric vehicles while I've been saying that, for now, they have a limited potential buyer audience. You can make a small pickup that is very useful. Like I said: It was buying a Ford Ranger that convinced me that I did not want to live without a pickup truck anymore. It just came in handy so many times. And most of the time it was very local stuff. You need to move a couch for your daughter. You need to go pick up a Christmas tree. You need to pick up bales of pine straw from the nursery a half mile down the street. You need to bring a desk your wife wants refurbished to a lady who does that and is 10 miles away. If you're going to go with the electric thing there is no reason not to develop a vehicle that'll fill that role.Electric cars are hard to make

There is no lawyer proof algorithm that could ever be written for truly self driving cars.∞∞∞ wrote:I hope Google and Tesla eventually team up. Sign me up for some self-driving electric cars.
Plus, there are too many assholes like me that will fcuk with them on the road
let's enjoy the viable electric cars and stop believing in fairy tales and unicorns... maybe in 1000 years when we have a sensible civilization reset (where we kill all the lawyers) will we see self driving cars as the norm

Ah.... so true
I'm fond of saying
We live in a country built by lawyers - for lawyers - run by Lawyers
But:
The law does not exist for the purpose of keeping lawyers employed...
as much as Lawyers would have us believe otherwise

I think some of the massive earth movers the Berkley Pit used to utilize were driven by an electric motor at each wheel and the Diesel engine was there to supply constant electric power to each of the wheels as the power needed was made much more efficiently that way. I didn't spend much time looking for backup to what I think I remember from a tour there long ago but I ran across this in the quick search.Skjellyfetti wrote:They'll have pickup trucks before long.

If they are using this on earth moving equipment then I'm pretty sure this will be used in all applications in fairly short order.
Don't know the engineering or if it's feasible but I don't know why a small gas powered or even hydrogen engine couldn't be used in an electric vehicle to supply extra electric generation for extended run on a battery.

I once had a coworker who was on an R&D team (for Benz I think) that was working on a hydrogen cell vehicle. Basically after one test crash in which the cell ignited (and subsequently exploded) the project was shut down. I doubt (and honestly hope we don't) see regular vehicles with hydrogen cell technology on the roads for every day use by the fucktards that drive regular cars now.Ursus A. We got the first one almost a decade ago...and the newer ones are even better.

That's true about the brake pads. I bought a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid in 2011 and put new brakes on it. I sold that car in December and a few days later the guy who bought it thanked me for putting on new brakes.Skjellyfetti wrote:Pwns wrote: And how reliable are parts and how easy is it to get stuff fixed that is under warranty?
These cars scream royal PITA to me.http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1087 ... d-actuallyBut among the things you may not know about Tesla is this: The Model S requires almost no maintenance.
Like pretty much any battery-electric vehicle, a Model S lacks many of the components that go wrong in gasoline cars.
Without the valves, camshafts,a crankshaft, connecting rods, gears, clutches, and more found in a gasoline car, the Tesla Model S, like any battery-electric car, needs almost no almost no regular adjustment.
About the only parts that need regular replacement are four tires and two windshield wiper blades.
Even brake pads, which you might expect to need regular replacement on such a high-performance car, last many times longer than those on comparable gasoline cars.
That's because the bulk of a Tesla's slowing power comes from regrenerative braking, or turning the motor into a generator to recharge the battery pack, slowing the car in the process.
The friction brakes are still there for hard or panic braking, of course, but they're used only a fraction as much.
(The same is true for hybrids, by the way. Ask your nearest Prius owner how long their brake pads last.)
A German study found that over eight years, battery-electric cars will be one-third less expensive to maintain--and many analysts view that as conservative.

Having said that, I can see myself owning a Tesla.
