I don't think that's true. I think if they'd have been left alone nobody would've been hurt. Yes, the White Nationalists clearly were prepared for trouble. But I think that's understandable. I think it was reasonable for them to anticipate that they would be confronted.
But they didn't go there "to hurt people." They went there to protest the removal of a statue and maybe make a statement. They were violently confronted and they violently responded.
Now, I'm sure they expected to be violently confronted and they bear some responsibility for doing what they did anyway. But it doesn't change the fact that the counter protesters were violent or excuse absolving the counter protesters of any responsibility for what happened.

For some reason, I don't think Lee would appreciate White Supremacist supporting him in this fight.

I hate to agree with Orrin Hatch, but he was right on this time: My dad and uncle enlisted to fight against scum like that. I happen to agree with leaving the statues alone and not trying to whitewash history but that's small shit comparitively and the time has come to give the Nazis what we gave them last time they pissed us off and if that's going to happen in the streets of our nation so be it. Be interesting to see which side the cops come down on at nut cutting time.

As PT Barnum said, "There is no such thing as bad publicity". The counter protesters actually brought more publicity to these white supremacist than they would have received under normal circumstances.Jjoey52 wrote: None of this would have happened if they (1). And that's good that they're getting their views out there. Good point. In the age of Twitter and clever memes and one sentence message board fodder, no one has the time nor the attention for nuanced and reasoned debate on really any topic. It's more about "shutting someone down" or "slamming" someone. While those things certainly motivate, they don't really educate. But no one seems to care about that anymore. None of this would fit on a sign and still be readable.kalm wrote:That would be a VERY strong statement the likes of which the left is motivated to make!JohnStOnge wrote:
But would it fit on a sign or be effective in a face to face confrontation???

Watching CNN for about 5 minutes on this. One CNN person said the white supremacist were a majority of Trump's base. A few minutes later she said they were a minority. Talk about a quick flip flop.

They didn't lead an armed insurrection against the government.UNI88 wrote:Bill Ayers and Bobby Rush were traitors too. When should they be executed?dbackjon wrote:Lol. Lee was a traitor to the United States who should have been executed for treason
Lee wasn't a perfect man but he had some admirable qualities. Rather than trying to erase his significant role in our history why don't we use these memorials as an opportunity to discuss where we are, where we came from and where we're going? Erasing history doesn't automatically change it or the future.

Do you see statues of Hiltler, Himmler, etc in Germany? I am sure they had a good quality or two.
We can have discussions of history without statues honoring rebellious traitors.
