Immigrant labor also undercuts wages. There are what, 12 million illegal immigrants? How many of those are working? I'd like to think we could absorb the demand domestically if wages were better.
I'd certainly be ok with raising wages and trying that out, although I think there's a lot more factors that we aren't considering in the equation. For one Americans are less prone to moving around for jobs than they once were, and are less prone to do physical labor as our standards of living has risen.

The first is an issue while the second isn't the worse problem to have as a developed nation. That said, we can't have it all unless we're ok with a weaker GDP...so something needs to give.

Spot on. I distinctly remember when they went through the apple orchards in Washington State several years ago and chased out all the illegals up there picking apples. Growers went down to the unemployment office and were offering jobs picking apples for $10/hour and nobody wanted them. Americans don’t want to do those jobs. There has to be a better solution to get the people into the country who DO.

By the way, day 5 of the shutdown. Anybody having issues? Lol.

Our government and their incessant hand wringing over “shutting down”...like they’re fucking indispensable.

If certain Government employees were dispensable, they wouldn't be working without pay today.

Get real. Certain Government operations are clearly indispensable. Most of those are either funded or the employees are working without pay right now.

Certainly, procurement analysis can wait, which is why I am at home.

So, like you're hoping that the people who were trying to figure out what was going on with the recent toxigenic E. coli outbreak from Romaine lettuce wouldn't be around to figure such things out for 2 years.
We know what happened. Trump reversed water quality rules, decreased inspections. Farmer used tainted water to irrigate crops. Free enterprise! We don't need no regulations!

This. My friend, the Pharm D at the VA will see a couple dozen patients today, mostly Viet Nam vets, many with PTSD, for consultation helping them to manage their diabetes and blood thinners and getting them to change their lifestyle. It's an uphill battle. She'll come home exhausted and torn apart from the struggles.

I don’t see why you’d disagree with that

Some of the biggest employers of illegal labor are large construction and service corporations.. the decision makers are shielded from all kinds of criminal and civil liability by the corporations they direct

So if they get caught using illegal Mexican roofers, it’s the corporation that is liable and not the CEO... so they would pay their fines as an operating cost and move on

Locking up a CEO or two is Page One of the playbook, Treep... right before the page that says lock up the landlord class...

Bingo..!!
A system built around no accountability for those at the top that profit the most
So of course any kind of reform that holds "The top" accountable
is going to be rejected by Congress immediately

:coffee:

So we'll fight about building a wall...
instead of actually fixing the problem
Which could be fixed in a month
Q: Name something that offends Republicans?
A: The actual teachings of Jesus

Yeah, I remember begging for leave. It was a Federal Employee version of Queen for a day. Most never bothered to save their leave when they were healthy. However,I did know of a few legit cases to which I donated.

I have roughly nine months of sick leave on the books, so I'm good for any extended medical situations that come my way. I know other fellow 20+ year employees who use sick leave as fast as they accumulate it. It's not illegal, but Christ, it's so lame. Nobody is sick 13 work days a year. One or two, sure, but 13? C'mon man.

I also save and roll forward my full six weeks allowance of annual leave each year, so I could conceivably be gone from work for around a year before exhausting everything, figuring in the additional 208 hours per year that would be earned while I was burning the rest.

My Mom used to head her teacher's union Sick Bank board. Every teacher (via the contract) contributed 1 day a year to the Bank, and teachers that ran out could apply for some of the bank. Per the contract, she had access to the number of sick days taken in prior years. The teachers that always took the maximum days yearly, and carried zero over had a tough task to convince Mom to get days from the bank. The teachers that banked some every year building up a nice balance but then had a major illness always got some of the bank.

Mom was able to retire a year early by applying all her banked sick time.

Good on her. That's the way it should be.

My mom had a full year of sick leave when she retired from the civil service. Under the CSRS (the old civil service retirement), that means she got that year counted as service, so she gets an extra 2% of her high-3 annual salary each year for life. Pretty sweet deal. Obama actually revised FERS (the new system) so that we can now credit our sick leave as creditable service as well. That means an extra 1.1% tacked on to my retirement.
