Everyone is entitled to their own dreams.

The "American Dream" is a bit of a cultural/economic construct related to history. The Roosevelts felt it included a fair wage for a fair day's work that would enable a retirement with dignity. From the 50's-70's it included the ability to buy the humble house with a white picket fence and be able to put your kids through school...often times on a single salary.

Most importantly, each generation was looking forward better lifestyle than their parents.

That's been diminished for good or bad reasons.

But it's a worthy discussion and fair criticism that Trip is laying down here.

Greed is the liberal's Boogeyman while sloth is the conservative's. Aren't they both bad in excess?

And why does Trip criticize financial greed but give greed for power a pass?

By our nature some humans are more ambitious than others. Curbing financial ambition will just channel it in other directions like government positions of authority.

And, financial ambition as the prime mover also leads towards the same...just with kleptocracy as an added bonus.

What the American Dream was and what it has become is very debateable but our materialism...not so much. His initial post didn’t say what it is, it just questioned the big house and two cars vision.

And then all materialistic and kicking down the ladder behind you apoplectic hell broke loose.

It’s a worthy discussion of which I’m not on either side. UNI88 makes a strong contribution to it. Why don’t you try? :)

My lawyer is very expensive and we are going to court again next week for the next phase.

All the good cities are socialist!
There’s not a single one on that map with a reasonable cost of living

I don’t get how cities that are next to impossible for the average Joe to live in get rated so highly

That depends on what you consider “high quality of living”

I consider living paycheck to paycheck as low quality of living

Does it always lead there? How much innovation has resulted from private sector vs. public sector ambition/greed?

Wrong. You need to check up on the definition of socialism.

So you disagree with this...?
the American dream was to create a just and equitable society in which liberty bears fruit to prosperity. It wasn't a "big house with a backyard and a couple of cars."
Interesting...but sounds hideous.

What was YOUR version of the American dream?

Very little of what you want to see happen in this country will occur without coercion

Your views are largely inimical to liberty - except in your Orwellian fever dreams where command economies are “liberty”

Partly true, but a necessitous man is not a free man either. Or...in modern terms, a man wanting a slightly improved standing compared to feudal lords can get become envious.

That axe swings both ways.

I just don't think 'broken' is the right word. They are what they are. Don't like it, don't live there. I would argue that a shithole city with bad schools, high crime and low cost housing is far more 'broken' than a city that is thriving so much that it has priced itself out of the market for a lot of people.

His initial post talked about what the American Dream was growing up.... so we're talking 10-15 years ago for Trip. Has anything substantially changed in that time?

BTW *debatable

I'm worried you recently had a stroke... or have you been diving into Mrs Kalm's pot stash? :?
