Knowing this sadistic fuck, he'll order us all back to work, even the non-essentials, without pay, just to create even more hardship.

Not much.

I just saw a good interview with Rep Dan Kildee on CNN, where he basically said that Trump, by design, has gotten rid of all sane people and non-lackeys at the WH and in his Cabinet to try to stave off a 25th Amendment initiation. The dude has finally gone full retard.

It's like Hitler in his bunker as the Russians (haha) are rolling towards Berlin. Great theater.

Yes it's CNN but they've got links to the polls and they're right:

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/18/politics ... index.html

One of the most interesting observations is this one:
About half of Americans (51%) said it would be unacceptable if the only way to end the shutdown was to pass a bill that includes Trump's requested funding for the border wall, according to a Pew Research Center poll released on Wednesday. On the other side, 29% said it would be unacceptable for the only end to the shutdown to come via a bill that does not include the president's requested funding for the wall.
I saw a clip of Rush Limbaugh today saying that if Trump would just hold on and not give in public opinion will eventually come around to his side. I wonder if that's true. But the idea that Trump may be listening to Limbaugh's alternative reality rants is disconcerting.

Oh well. At least even Limbaugh appears to realize that public opinion is NOT on Trump's side as of now.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

I don’t know about that.

I think way too many people - Dems, Republicans, independents, everybody - are working from the assumption that Trump gives a flying fvck...

Either the GOP in the Senate has a rebellion, or Pelosi caves on the wall, but Trump isn’t going to cave. He can do this straight on until 2020.
Agree. Trump is in IDGAF mode. GOP Senate will cave. GOP have shown themselves to be pussies time and time again.

Border security is one thing and the Democrats are on board with it. It's this BS over a wall. A fucking wall. :ohno:
Meh, donks have been "on board" with securing the border in the past and haven't followed through. Not sure why anyone would believe them now.

Wasn’t there a recent president who fired, like, 250 of his top military officers because he didn’t like the answers he was getting from them? Wonder who that was....

(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump plans to renew his demand for a border wall but also offer incentives for congressional Democrats in an announcement Saturday that will not include a declaration of a national emergency, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The person would not discuss what Trump plans to offer to the Democrats who now control the U.S. House, beyond saying that it may have something to do with immigration.

Interesting to see what it is. Trump just needs to put DACA on the table and up his asking price back up to $25B (or higher). At that point Pelosi and the donks will have to answer for not wanting to make "Dreamers" legal when she continues to refuse to negotiate.

Honestly not sure why Trump didn't have DACA on the table from day 1.

Ive been saying this for weeks now

There’s stupidity and politics all around this thing - none of them give a damn about anything but their base voters

I think theyve all painted themselves into their respective corners and now can’t budge... nobody can give even the perception of a win to their opponents.

Honestly if the new crop of freshmen Congresscritters werent such a partisan bunch of jerks Id be optimistic for the future but its only going to get worse

The pressure is mounting on Trump though, and not on the Democrats. Time is not Trump's friend on this.

By the way, I am finally seeing some hard numbers on people affected. Other than the 800K (out of 2M) federal civilians not getting paid, the number of contractors and grantees currently not working is 4.1 million. So right now, Trump has taken away the paychecks of 5 million people with his wall demand.
FWIW Dec BLS #s just under 157 million full time in the workforce, so 5 million would be a little over 3% of the US fulltime workforce not working or not being paid due to the partial govt shutdown.

Well, if the I-AA talk on here hadn’t died in the last 5-6 years, I wouldn’t have wondered over to the NDSU circle jerk. If I had started a JMU or even a CAA thread on here every week of the season, I would have been talking to myself..

Ok back to the topic at hand. My JSOesque take on all this (most probably has been said already).
1. Physical barriers can be effective if done right. Otherwise fences & walls wouldn’t exist. Example would be the Israeli’s 400+ miles of fencing/wall.
2. Sucks for the fed employees, but at least they will all be paid, and only missed 1 paycheck so far. Sucks worse for the contractors & vendors.
3. Most of the American public has felt little to no effect of the shutdown- yet.
4. Plurality of the voters have a short attention span. Oct 2013 shutdown I remember hearing political talking heads pontificate about how the partial govt shutdown was going to hurt conks in the 2014 midterms. A year later conks ended up gaining seats in the 2014 midterms. 21 months before the 2020 elections is an ETERNITY.
5. While Trump might lose 2020 in part because of the partial govt shutdown, 100% chance Trump loses 2020 if he mostly caves now on his signature campaign issue- he’ll lose his base.
6. Zero chance Trump gets physical barrier funding, or meaningful border security, in the future, if he totally caves now.
7. Pelosi & Reed refusing barrier funding is because of 5 words: TRUMP. They’ve voted for it in the past (2006 & 2013). They hate Trump (the feeling is mutual) and the people who voted for him. They know no “wall” = Trump loses his base support and loses 2020, and that is their #1 priority above all else. If it was any other conk they’d be more willing to compromise.
8. Both sides need to compromise at this point. An offer by Pelosi & Shumer of $0 or $1 dollar isn’t a compromise. Trump might have to settle for less than 5.7 billion and offer something like DACA.
