Seriously, you hadn't heard of the band before? I mean, not for their music, but for their civil disobedience in Russia prior to this? I'm pretty sure even Fox or other right wing stuff would've covered them before.

Everyone talks a good game before Russian arty dances on them for real. I pray to God they can disrupt the siegers, some way, somehow before they can fully deploy. Once the Russians get their guns placed and launchers brought up, it's lights out. They can just walk a ring of arty in just ahead of their tanks and infantry and nothing will stop it. Yes, they'll get sniped a bit once they hit the neighborhoods, but still.

There's a reason arty is the King of Battle.

I think the interesting dynamic in all of this, though, has been Zelensky. He's put a dynamic, vibrant, human face on the Ukranian state and their resistance at this point and he's basically pulled the West by the nose into this conflict and on Ukraine's side. It wasn't just a few weeks ago that Biden was trying to parse what a small invasion would look like versus what a real invasion would look like, and how the US would respond differently to this. Germany was still balking at sending any aid whatsoever and seemed to even balk at the idea that they couldn't use the new gas pipeline. Heck, even China was gearing up to say that Taiwan was their Ukraine and they would be justified in just scooping them up just as Russia was reabsorbing Ukraine.

But resistance on the ground, and now a surprisingly charismatic leading of the Ukrainian government has made Western countries, from the US to the EU to the UK, rethink their approaches and become much more strident in their defense of Ukraine. Sure, no one's sending actual manpower support, but we never would've gone to the extents that we have now with sanctions and condemnations had Ukraine not held up this long and more importantly, had not Ukraine found a real voice in their leader. It's amazing what one productive leader can do.

It was just 10 years ago - they performed an impromptu concert/video in a church and the Orthodox church got upset about it. I think two of the band members ended up serving about 2 years in prison for it.

Heard the Euro countries balked on sending jets to Ukraine, but that was yesterday afternoon so that could have changed again.
