Public schools are not public. They are government schools run totally by the government. This is why there was not for a very long time and should not be now a Dept. of Education. They only call it public because it makes it sound like we the public own it.

Watch: Roomful of Rich, White NYC Parents Get Big Mad at Plan to Diversify Neighborhood’s Schools

Anne Branigin
Friday 12:01pm

Anyone laboring under the delusion that New York City is a progressive bastion need look no further than the city’s school system, which remains among the most segregated in the country.

In an effort to fight that trend, which has only gotten worse thanks to gentrification, rising income and wealth inequality throughout the city’s five boroughs, schools on the Upper West Side—one of the wealthiest and whitest sections of Manhattan—are looking to adopt a plan that would require all local middle schools to reserve a quarter of their seats for students who score below grade level on state English and math tests.

The plan is designed to make Upper West Side schools more reflective of New York City’s diverse demographics, and make sure underprivileged students have access to the sorts of advantages and resources that the neighborhood’s well-funded schools can provide.

Well, that plan didn’t go over so well in a room full of wealthy white parents.

https://www.theroot.com/watch-room-fill ... D=ref_fark
After reading the article I don't think the subject parents were concerned about race/ethnicity per se. It seems to me that what they were concerned about is similar to the concern behind college admissions and diversity.

I think that most parents would be pissed if they live in a school district then find out that their kid can't go to the school in their district because that spot is reserved for someone who scored below grade level on English and Math tests.

And I don't think the parents involved care about the ethnicity of the person who scored below grade level. I think they just don't think it's fair to do that and I think they're right.

There's an implied false premise behind some of the statements made too. That false premise is that the racial trends seen in test scores are due to socioeconomic disadvantage. And I don't think that's the case. I think the racial variation would be reduced somewhat if socioeconomic factors could be eliminated but it would nowhere near be eliminated.

BTW if they are going to worry about school funding what they should do is address school funding. I don't think it'd work in terms of changing outcomes. But that's what they should do. Take whatever steps are necessary to make sure money spent per student in "Rich White" districts is about the same as that spent per student in "Minority" districts.

It's public b/c your tax dollars pay for it. It's paid for by the PUBLIC and is for the education of the PUBLIC.

I've always called BS on that. The media and Democraps conflat ID with Driver's License.

You need an ID to buy:
cigarettes
alcohol

firearms
get a cell phone
get a job
apply for a loan
get a payday loan
cash a check
Apply for Welfare
apply for food stamps
apply for unemployment
apply for medicare/medicaid
rent a home

get a mortgage
get married
drive/buy/rent a car
get a hotel room
hunting/fishing license
get certain medicines
pick up a prescription
fly

Hell, you need an ID to enter some establishments. I've bolded the ones that I think the poorest in our populations would need an ID for. So - if you're 18 and older without an ID - do we really want you voting? Also, if you're 18 without an ID, how are you living w/o a job or welfare, etc...? :coffee:

It's called satire, Chuck.

Private schools are mostly non-profit, avoiding taxes. It's like sending your kids to a fancy welfare camp on the public nickel.

No property taxes. That's a local issue. That is offset by public school savings by not having those kids enrolled in public schools.
They still generate payroll taxes - Federal and State.
And there are no real profits to tax as any surplus is put back into the school.

Yeah, we did three years (two oldest son and one younger son), got our three first place Pinewood Derby trophies, then got the fuck out. All the rest of the nonsense:

That's a shame. I'm an Eagle Scout. Our troop never did any fundraising. It's possible we may have done it once. But we never sold popcorn or anything like that. I had a lot of fun and the guys that I was in Scouts with are still my friends to this day. Actually, my friend Greg ended up dating a girl he met in Explorers. But we did a lot of outdoors and marine activities like sailing, rock climbing, shooting tournaments, fishing tourneys, capture the flag tourneys, etc... That sort of stuff seemed to be what our Council was geared towards.

Having said that - I still don't know what Girl Scouts do aside from selling cookies and going to Savannah, Ga to the home of the Girl Scout founder.

That's a shame. I don't see the problem with bringing girls into it. Clearly the Girl Scouts aren't going to do anything.

I signed petitions and spoke out against the BSA for discriminating against gays, it goes against what they preach, but i'm glad they've pretty much put that shit to rest.

That's how I remembered it too from my youth but I'm sure some of it depends on the troop and there probably some that still focus on the important shit. But it's also surprisingly expensive for the clothes, badges, books etc despite the fundraising.

A good friend of mine was an Eagle Scout. Quite the achievement. :thumb:
