I watch all the political shows on MSNBC, mostly because there is a definite liberal slant (yes, I admit it). A frequent analyst there is Pat Buchanan who is tapped for conservative perspective on all things. Twelve years ago, that guy was a complete and utter Pat Robertson, Dick Cheney, Ronald Reagan cocksucker, but, now, he is a reasonable, balanced politico. It's refreshing to see him talk in not so incendiary ways about liberalism, government, geopolitics, etc. The guy gets it. He has not abandoned his conservatism, he's just the "compassionate" Conk that dozens of Conks around him claimed themselves, wrongly, to be.

In their old age, it is Cap'n Cat's great hope that people like Z and T and native and Col Hogan adopt a similar attitude and begin to see the entire picture and abandon the hate and discontent as Buchanan has.

I think you're right in many cases, 93, but not with Buchanan. The guy's an elder statesman, now, and, as such, his wisdom is tempered by all his experiences with both the left and the right.

Beck is just a fvck who will be doing the weather for the Scottsbluff, NE, ABC affiliate in a year or two.

Glenn Beck - the guy who - on CNN - asked a Muslim US Congressman from Minnesota to "prove you aren't one of the terrorists, prove you aren't one of the bad guys" - yeah... real lefty there...

Buchanan is as he ever was - he's still a right-wing asshole, but the right in this country moved away from him - now he's typed as a "paleocon" because the party he represents has been hijacked by evanganutters, keyboard commandos, raging bigots and social darwinist assholes who forgot where they came from. Buchanan conservatives are an endangered species (though his raging anti-semitism and hatred for all things latino might find him a home with the raging bigots) - a conservative who sees a real place for government - but disagrees about the specifics. (which is funny considering he was the one who cooked up block grants in the 70's - which led to the beginnings of the conk "starve the beast" philosophy)

Perhaps poor word choice on my part, but you can't deny that Beck's shtick on CNN was left of his shtick on Fox. I was simply making the point that these guys play the role that the check-writer wants them to play.

he's embraced the Paddy Chayefsky schtick since moving to Fox - it always works for the out party viewers to talk like the world is ending... so he's dialed it up - but it's not really further to the right, it's just louder, shriller, and more whiny.

Buchanan? Nobody takes him seriously. Ever since Buckley exposed him for the antisemite he is, Pat's put on a royal pout. He's the most statist "conservative" who ever walked the earth.

Some years ago, some client ropoed me into going to a Buchanan event where he spoke. The way he said "Ruth Bader Ginsburg" -- the emphasis on the last syllable -- reeked of bigotry.

Pat's nickname in college was "ol' suckerpunch".
