Halloween Edition - How to vote from six feet under

WASHINGTON - Even death can't stop some voters.

Thanks to the increasing popularity of absentee voting, a rising number of the recently deceased are casting ballots — legally.

The trick is to pull the lever before you kick the bucket.

States such as California, Texas and Florida intentionally count ballots sent in by voters who then died before Election Day, while states such as Colorado, Washington and South Dakota have no reliable method for discarding the votes of the deceased.

In the old days, voting by the dead was reserved for big-city political machines looking to stuff the ballot box illegally.

But the new kind of dead voting is a side effect of the popularity of absentee ballots.

In 32 states, any registered voter can mail in a ballot instead of going to a voting booth on Election Day, according to the Early Voting Information Center. And in 14 other states, they can do so as long as they have a good reason.

We will accept a mail/absentee ballot in MT from a dead person.

Seriously, how do you determine if they were alive when the ballot was mailed...

Every accepted ballot is returned in an envelope with the voters signature on it. Said signature is then compared with the voters registration and absentee request forms. As far as the date goes, we have a post mark and a signature date on the affidavit. We did have a gal pass away last week and her ballot had come in about 5 days earlier.

I'm ok with that, as long as there are good checks and balances...a citizen is a citizen until they die, and their vote should count if a state allows early voting if they die before election day...

I just want to make sure a family member doesn't cast their vote "because I know that's how they would vote if they were alive"...

I hear that.

The thing that gets me is the older folks with Alzheimer’s or dimentia that come into our office that don't even now what year it is will pick up a ballot with a family member and leave the office. I know they have no clue of what is going on and the family member is essentially voting twice, but as long as the voter signs their own card, there is nothing we can do without a court order.

One good thing we do have in place is that a Power of Attorney is not valid for voting purposes. :twocents:

It doesn't matter, I just shred the ballots of the people that voted incorrectly. :coffee:
