Officials: U.S. Aware of Hasan Efforts to Contact al Qaeda
U.S. intelligence agencies were aware months ago that Army Major Nidal Hasan was attempting to make contact with people associated with al Qaeda, two American officials briefed on classified material in the case told ABC News.
It is not known whether the intelligence agencies informed the Army that one of its officers was seeking to connect with suspected al Qaeda figures, the officials said.
One senior lawmaker said the CIA had, so far, refused to brief the intelligence committees on what, if any, knowledge they had about Hasan's efforts.
CIA director Leon Panetta and the Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, have been asked by Congress "to preserve" all documents and intelligence files that relate to Hasan, according to the lawmaker.

As much as I hate to say it, this is a good case study for wiretaps.

If one terrorist had managed to infiltrate the armed forces...how many more do you think are still in?

Someone really thinks what happened at Ft. Hood was not terrorism...AZGrizFan wrote:I wonder if ky jelly is still sure this wasn't a terrorist act?dbackjon wrote:If true, heads should roll.![]()

The FBI defines terrorism as "The unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a Government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives."
http://terrorism.about.com/od/whatister ... rism_6.htm
So, if one intelligence agency (apprently the CIA in this case) had knowledge that Hasan was even trying to contact a known terrorist organization, and that wasn't shared with the Army counter-intelligence agency (CID), then the system really is broke...

I never said this wasn't an act of terrorism. I was saying the day it happened that it was too early to know what his motive was.AZGrizFan wrote:I wonder if ky jelly is still sure this wasn't a terrorist act?dbackjon wrote:If true, heads should roll.![]()

New information is coming out that is definetely pointing to the dude being a radical muslim. I think his motive is more clear now.

Was Sept 11, 2001 to early to guess that was an act of terrorism?Skjellyfetti wrote:I never said this wasn't an act of terrorism. I was saying the day it happened that it was too early to know what his motive was.AZGrizFan wrote:

The hero of this incident, Kimberly Munley, is likely related to me somehow.
My mom's maiden name is Munley -- which is a rare variant of the more common spelling "Munnelly." The name comes from almost exclusively County Mayo in Ireland, and the name is rare even in those parts, in either spelling. Only 37 "Munleys," most of whom were related, came through Ellis Island.
This young woman took a bullet in bringing this tragedy to an end. She is certainly every bit the hero as Capt. Sullenberger.

Political heads should roll, not bureaucratic heads!dbackjon wrote:If true, heads should roll.
By banning the use of the word "terrorist," attacking the intelligence agencies, downplaying the war on terror and encouraging a bureaucratic atmosphere of extreme political correctness, the responsibility lies squarely with the Obama administration and its allies.

Instances like this make you wonder whether parts of the Patriot Act were all bad - I'm all about first amendment and the right against unlawful search and seizure, but lives are sometimes lost by not acting on info in your grasp.

Agree....but certainly not a justification for those of us who decide not to sign away our privacy....native wrote:Not a big deal for an active duty officer. You sign your privacy away when you join the military.bobbythekidd wrote:As much as I hate to say it, this is a good case study for wiretaps.

Or, we could just outlaw handgun ownership since we're deciding to have a fire sale on our constitutionally guaranteed rights....they're are certainly more people who exercise thy're right to privacy than exercise they're right to own a gun, so shouldn't we impact the least amount of people when "voluntarily" giving up our rights to feel safe?ASUG8 wrote:Instances like this make you wonder whether parts of the Patriot Act were all bad - I'm all about first amendment and the right against unlawful search and seizure, but lives are sometimes lost by not acting on info in your grasp.
