(CNN) -- The U.S Army has granted a member of a religious minority permission to keep his turban, beard and uncut hair while he serves in the military, the Pentagon and a group representing him said.

Capt. Kamaljit Singh Kalsi, a doctor, is a Sikh, a faith that calls on its adherents not to shave or cut their hair.

Had we not just had a Muslim attack a base do you think they wouldn't have been as willing to let him keep it?

I get that. However, why would the government want to piss off another person of Middle Eastern religion that can be highly violent when it comes to their religion?

I figured since it had some of it's roots in Pakistan it would still fit the Middle East

Eh, more Sikhs in the US and UK than Pakistan or Afghanistan.... but I don't think the latter two are considered Middle eastern either.

Nah, I'm actually in grad school with people from India... one of whom is a Sikh. He's gone over this with me before when he was talking about how he thought some people here might discriminate against him because they thought he was muslim.

I worked for a Pakistani for a while and he filled me in on the Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus, etc.. of the area. I didn't need to look a whole lot up of what I said. Then again I didn't so much of substance...

In perspective, the Army's decision reflects what is great about America.

Beard, turban, and hair — eh, I'm fine with all that. Let him keep 'em. But I'd tell him the little flute and the snake in the basket have absolutely got to go. We're trying to run an army here, for shit's sake, not a street bazaar, a Pentecostal Sunday school, or a goddamn petting zoo

He may have it allowed, but his commanders can sure write him up for it on every review and give him bad reviews because he looks like shit. It is unprofessional and should not be allowed by a doctor. If he wants to wear a green beret, then he can keep the beard and hair. Until then, put him in the stockade or kick him the hell out. I'd say the exact same thing about someone no matter what their religion was, it is not about you as an individual.

Working in medical practice with 6 Sikh doctors, his look is fine, for a doctor. They keep everything neat and clean, as required by their religion.

And any commander giving him a bad review, after the Army has specifically granted him the permission to do so, just for his look would be in deep shit.

Much ado about nothing. He is a doctor, not on the line, etc.

No - the Cap'n is right. Your reaction, however, reflects the typical pussification of straight white males who still can't adjust to not having 100% of everything go their way.

Gosh I hope we keep lowering our standards. I'm curious to see how low our military can go. Soon we will have the Peace Corps invading 3rd world countries on our behalf.
