British and US officials held secret discussions about ousting Saddam Hussein two years before invading Iraq and months before the September 11 terrorist attacks, the official inquiry into the war heard yesterday.

Senior civil servants said that the “drumbeats” from Washington had begun soon after the election of George W. Bush amid concern that sanctions against Saddam’s regime were ineffectual and losing international support. Overthrowing the Iraqi leadership was considered by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2001 but had been ruled out because it had “no basis in law”, the inquiry heard. At the same time, the Attorney-General was raising questions about the legality of Britain continuing to enforce “no-fly zones” over Iraq.

However, the September 11 attacks on America led to heightened concern there that terrorists could obtain weapoms of mass destruction. “Not to say that we had any evidence that Iraq was a direct link,” said Sir Peter. “Indeed, we did not have any such evidence.

“We heard people in Washington thought there might be some link between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden — undocumented. I don't think we saw any evidence of it.”

I'm gonna be honest. I never though 9/11 and Iraq were related so the time frame they came up with that shitty idea really doesn't bother me in the least.

I never did either. The part that bothered me is that it was nothing more then Bush hating the guy. We were told it was WMDs, then terrorists, then liberating the Iraqi people. The motivation behind the war change so many times I lost track.

Very true. Its easy to point and shoot when you aren't the one going or sending kids to war. But that goes for most politics and politicians. They all have their own agendas and use their power to do it.

The fact that Saddam tried to assassinate Bush I isn't an excuse to lie to the American public and start an unnecessary war.

If Bush really lied about WMD's vs actually believing they existed as did Clinton, Gore and Congress, why didn't Bush continue the lie and plant WMD's in Iraq and claim they found them after the invasion. IMO he actually believed the intel he was being fed.

The fact that some people don't think there were wmd's amazes me. Saddam used them on his own people, they existed but he had YEARS to hide that shit. When I was in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Iraq wasn't getting ammunition and supplies from it's neighbors either. I saw stock pile after stock pile of nice, shiny, new ammunition that wasn't made in Iraq (Cough, Jordon, cough). They just didn't have time to hide that shit or it would have never existed. You can argue about what type of wmd's idiot boy had, but he most certainly had chemical and most certainly wanted nuclear. Give even a dumb criminal years to hide their tracks and most can do it. The world is better off with out that fuck-face in it, period. No one is drafting you to go fight this one so be careful how you sit on the sidelines. If you are so pissed off about the war, go out and protest, talk to your congressmen. But most of all, go support your troops. They are the ones making the sacrifice for us whether you or they agree with it.
