The State Senate has begun debating the bill that has already passed the House and that the Governor has vowed to sign. The Senate is expected to narrowly pass this bill once the vote is taken.

I found this column by the archbishop of Newark, NJ, which ran in the state's largest newspaper, interesting. If you read this in its entirety, it seems the archbishop has no objection to the state extending every benefit available to married couples to any couple that has a mutual economic and social relationship -- including same sex couples. It seems he simply objects to using the term "marriage" to describe these civil unions.
