Pretending to "know God" is the core of all human dishonesty
Being open to the possibility of God is the light of human optimism
Accepting the beauty around us in all it's forms is to dream about God

Well, um, there's you. And Joe. And catmounter.
Me, I just asked a simple question from the stance of an observer. I just don't see what he or she has done for anyone, ever.

No I mean starting these god threads? I just chime in when it gets obnoxiously insulting.

Still haven't seen a good answer from the believers. How has God intervened to make things better on Earth? He is all-powerful, right? Why doesn't he appear to set sh*t straight?

Cap, having a discussion over the nature of God over a message board is impossible. I'd be happy to sit down with a beer or two someday and talk about it. The best we can do is discuss the existence of God -- and I think even Jeff acknowledges the existence of a some creative force, although he does not accept it as a "personal Creator."
All I'll say is that the idea of an "impersonal Creator" is contrary to our whole understanding of what it means to create. "Creation" by man, be it a work of literature, art, or something else, is highly personal, in our experience. We feel a personal attachment to that which we create.
Indeed, when we ourselves create life, usually there is nothing which is more personal to us. In those rare cases when someone does not have that personal attachment to their own offspring, we often consider them moral monsters.
Why would our creator create us with such a personal attachment to our own creation; but lack it Himself?
Why would our creator create us so that we would feel morally superior to It?
Of course, none of this is proof per se of a personal God, but I do think it tends to suggest that our Creator has a personal attachment to us.

Of course humans have a personal desire to have a personal creator... but the argument that "The desire to have a God is proof of God" as you assert is sketchy.. but I've always liked it. However, the simplest most basic examination of that concept that desire is simply EGO.. we want god to want us - we want to believe god pays special attention to us... that's "self awareness" which is simply ego at work...
I've got no issues with that as an idea for gods love... in it's entirety "all things"
why is it not enough to simply accept creation in all it's forms, and put all creations as "equal to each other" we have the desire to claim we're in gods image... instead of forwarding the notion that all things are an image of god..?
One of my biggest complaints about organized religions is the hyper self awareness of the organization itself - which is a very dangerous and short step from - God pays more attention to my religion than your religion... We're gods children not you...
So the half measure you suggest, of accepting that God created us specially - needs to go ALL THE WAY and not stop at "US"
Ego and sickness and greed are the tools of half measures and half ideas... peace exists in "whole"
The very idea of "A" church - one concept - is dangerous and proven again and again to be deadly for those who are "not" of that one group
I accept all things as the image of god more easily than "we" are the image of god... and I accept that all things are as close to god as any one thing... each person (all people) are born with and know exactly what they need to know about god - there are no God experts
God experts = ego
ego = I am more than you
I am more than you = hatred and dehumanization
all short steps... which is how we've gotten to where we are today...

As I said, some issues are too complex to have a meaningful discussion over a message board.
That being said, I think the more relevant question is what have WE done for the betterment of mankind in the name of God, and that in each respect, it is a personal question.
