TULSA, Okla - Evangelist Oral Roberts, who rose from tent revivals to found a multimillion-dollar organization and an Oklahoma university bearing his name, has died. He was 91.

His spokesman A. Larry Ross said by phone from Carrollton, Texas, that Roberts died Tuesday of complications from pneumonia in Newport Beach, Calif.

Roberts was hospitalized after a fall on Saturday. He had survived two heart attacks in the 1990s and a broken hip in 2006.

Couple of Years ago our women's basketball played in an NCAA 1st and 2nd round regional at Purdue. ORU was one of the other teams in our "pod", I think playing Candice Parker's Tennessee team. Our student section, for almost the entire game, alternated between chanting "Lets Go Oral", and "We want Oral".

Funny how you want separation of church and state when it comes to public nativity scenes but you don't want to separate church and state when it comes time to feed the beast with other people's money. You really can't have it both ways.

I'm agnostic, so I don't have a dog in the fight, but the flaw in your logic is so obvious that a response is obligatory.

I was going to post the same thing, but the irony was so strong that it stunned my fingers into motionlessness.

You can put your plastic jesus wherever the hell you want to, I really don't give a fuck. Shove it up your ass if you're into that sort of thing, I don't care.

My beef is with political groups hidding behind religion while pushing a political agenda.

So the organization has their own fire, police, DOT, FDA, EPA, military, etc? If not, they should quit stealing the services that tax paying americans are responsible for.

Sooo...

...the church's member's personal taxes (income, sales, property, business) don't count?

Good point, and yes they count. So do you think the tax revenues from the organization's membership equal what they and the organization take out of the public coffers in services?

Considering the services provided back to the community in so many forms which offset "needs" that would otherwise be a taxpayer burden (HHS, criminal justice, counseling), the church should be billing the govt. but for loss of their tax-exempt status (for profit).

Your ASSumption of any logic, or lack of it, in my post is flawed, Butch. I'd rather they all fell of the face of the earth, doof.

Nice try, Toy Soldier.

Give me a break, App. Whitewashing the entire group for the (albeit VERY public) failures of a few is disingenuous at best.

And given the proliferation of NON-RELIGIOUS non-profits, why all the angst about churches and faith-based organizations getting a tax break? Did you ever stop to think about the good that is done by them? Churches all across the country run food pantries, job fairs, and all sorts of things that save the government money because the government isn't paying for them. For example, take Teen Challenge. That's a faith-based organization dedicated to getting people (not just teens) off of drugs. They have a wildly better success rate than any secular program simply because they factor in God. It's the good that the church does that was the reason why the government authorized the tax breaks in the first place. In fact, it was expected, back in the day, that those in need would get help from the church BEFORE sponging off the government. What's wrong with that?
