WASHINGTON – Taking an important step on the thorny path to closing the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba , the White House plans to announce Tuesday that the government will acquire an underutilized state prison in rural Illinois to be the new home for a limited number of terrorist suspects held at Guantanamo .
Administration officials as well as Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn will make an official announcement at the White House.
Officials from both the White House and Durbin's office confirmed that President Barack Obama had directed the government to acquire Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Ill., a sleepy town near the Mississippi River about 150 miles from Chicago.
A Durbin aide said the facility would house federal inmates and no more than 100 detainees from Guantanamo Bay .

Why don't we just decapitate them and get it over with?

Move to China or Iran if you're a fan of brutal executions.

Have to give BO credit for moving them to his most recent home state.

This would be great for the Thompson area. The facility was built a few years ago, state of the art first rate modern detention facility. Due to the political mess that IL was in with Gov Baloneyvich, he never would either staff the site or put inmates there, even though other facilities were overcrowded.
If it can be leased/sold to the feds, it would be a fantastic thing for the economy of the area.

Anyone else feel safer with them on US soil?
if they escape here they're f'ed. One picture of an escaped terror fugitive on US soil and all the redneck FoxNews watchers will be on him like flies on shit.
Who the hell is going to look for them if they escape in Cuba? Raul Castro? Eliam Gonzalez?

But do either of those documents apply?
These guys are not US citizens - no Constitutional protection.
And they aren't uniformed enemy combatants - does the GC apply to them?

Facts like this aren't needed for OSBF.

Non-citizens do have Constitutional rights - not all of them, but due process does extend to non-citizens
Turbans aren't a uniform? You are splitting hairs with that one.

And I'm kind of fond of the fact that we have a more just system than places like Iran.

Exactly and the citizens are thrilled at the boost their economy will receive, yet on Capitol Hill the neoconks are still shrilling the "we don't want em here!!!" same old boring trife, all falling on deaf ears I might add.

Nothing brutal about executing a terrorist, in fact you may be saving a baby sometime in the future, you know one of those babys you guys tired to abort.

If you want to execute them, fine, but what's the point of beheading them? Doesn't exactly send a great message to the rest of the world.
And yes, I know you don't give a fuck what the rest of the world thinks, and I don't give a fuck that you don't give a fuck.

Well? Which is it? It certainly isn't BOTH....
And when THEY start applying the Geneva Convention, so should we. Until then. Fuck 'em. HARD.

Interestingly enough, we don't give a fuck that you don't give a fuck that we don't give a fuck what the rest of the world thinks.

At this point I believe its neither. They haven't been charged under any US law, thus granting them the typical criminal defendant's rights (e.g. speedy trial, habeus corpus, etc..) and they aren't being held as uniformed enemy combatants.
Its as grey an area as you can get.
I wonder if bringing them into the US will open up the possiblity of additional rights being bestowed? Probably not considering Gitmo is considered US land (I think).
I read a SCOTUS case on this once and now I can't remember any of the holdings or reasoning.

Boys, this could go on all day. Why don't we just send them to hard labor camps in Siberia and be done with it.

If you're too much of a pussy to take off their heads, this would be a suitable subsitute.
