Earlier this year Senator Dick Durbin admitted that the banks control Washington. Now there's this rant from former Senator Fritz Hollings highlighting among other things opposition to Buy America policies by the U.S. Chamber that were subsequently removed from the bailout.
Outsource pollution, worker safety, and wages overseas and the cheap imports we buy will make up the difference. Nice plan Clinton.
Blame the government all you want it but it's becoming more clear everyday that the government simply serves the interests of it's real constituents who exist to create a profit for their executives and shareholders. Free trade is as big a sham for average americans as the free market is.
We are only now seeing the fruits being brought forth of the government's disdain for the average citizen. I am all for one working hard to obtain their wealth, but 2009 will go down as the biggest year in the Stock Market for one side and yet, still record unemployment for the other side. The American Dream, I'm afraid, is dead. As somebody who is out competing for a job on a daily basis, trust me, the look of hopelessness in some folks eyes is a real eye opener. What got us here? What has the citizenry done to deserve this wrath of hatred from the very government we put in place? I would like SERIOUS answers. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Woops, she almost let slip the evil word.
But I wonder if the oil companies really mind the socialization of their externalities? Do the taxes they pay equal the costs of the pollution caused by their product? How about the money spent on public roadways? How much do they pitch in for our socialized military to keep shipping lanes open through the Persian Gulf and the Straits of Hormuz?

The government doesn't hate you. It just has no time for you. There are bigger and more important interested parties than you who if allowed to be successful will benefit us all.

Ask yourself c-man, where is power currently concentrated? Does everybody win at the end of a game of Monopoly?

Also, in all seriousness, keep your head up. Use your down time as an opportunity to educate yourself and aquire new skills. That's your job right now until you can find a better one that actually pays. As hard as it may seem, be positive and look at this as an opportunity that you can take advantage of.
And Merry Christmas right back at ya.

Compared to when we protected domestic industries and jobs, and free markets as in the type that provide for a more stable economy versus the under-regulated as free of government intervention as possible markets - promoted by geniuses like Alan Greenspan, Reagan, and Robert Rubin. These type of free markets exist in places like Somalia and in situations like the drug trade. Not exactly what we should be aspiring to.
Fair markets that benefit the masses on a national scale cannot exist without government. If you want to argue degrees of regulation that's fine, but it's clear we have not regulated our markets enough over the last 10 years.
Hence the "free market" is a myth and those who espouse it's supposed self corrective qualites are shallow boobs.

Thanks. Not all is bad. Company that laid us off just called me back and wants me to work today and tomorrow before the Christmas break. Hey, it's 2 days pay at least.

Hey Kalm...
I assume that you do not own any stocks or contribute to any 401K program or invest in any mutual funds.

I'm not surprised you made that assumption.
I do not have a 401K but I am invested in stocks, mutual funds, and municipal bonds.
