Arpaio was elected Maricopa County sheriff in 1992 and has been reelected to five 4-year terms.

Arpaio's accomplishments as Sheriff, from the Maricopa County web site, include:

Arpaio has over 10,000 inmates in his jail system. In August, 1993, he started the nation’s largest Tent City for convicted inmates. Two thousand convicted men and women serve their sentences in a canvas incarceration compound.

Chain gangs which contribute thousands of dollars of free labor to the community. The male chain gang, and the world’s first-ever female and juvenile chain gangs, clean streets, paint over graffiti, and bury the indigent in the county cemetery.

Tough policies banning smoking, coffee, movies, pornographic magazines, and unrestricted TV in all jails.

Sheriff Joe has lost the County tens of millions in lawsuits because of abuse.

Why does he keep getting reelected? Because Maricopa County is filled with Morons.

And when the two Maricopa County regular posters on the board, who politically disagree on most things, both have the same negative opinion of him, that should tell you something.

Seriously, what is the case against Sheriff Joe? Are the accomplishments I listed false? Do you disagree that those accomplishments are worthy? How has he done a poor job? Is the crime rate too high?

When it comes to Arpaio, YEP. I would venture a guess that Arpaio gets at LEAST 85% of the vote of the 55+ crowd.

They push the "Arpaio" button in the voting booth because he keeps them pesky Mexicans in check---granted it's thruogh police brutality and abuse and profiling, but hey....don't let little things like illegal activity slow you down, right?
