In 1978, during the height of the Carter administration, minimum wage was $2.65 which adjusted for inflation comes to $6.38. In 2007, minimum wage was $5.85, yet with inflation adjustments, it only comes to $4.41. This is all based on what the dollar was earning in 1996. Is one then led to believe that 30 years of reaganomics hurt the standard for minimum wage? Simply asking, not looking to pick a fight since I am a registered independent. But I just could not believe these figures.

The rich have gotten richer and the poor have gotten poorer, not that's a bad thing, of course.

Yup, no problem paying for rent, a vehicle, insurance (including health care ) buying groceries, utilities, and maybe even a little child care on these grossly jacked up rates of today's minimum wages.

End the Fed today, leave Minimum wage alone, and the purchasing power of the dollar and overall wealth of the country will increase

Yep. There shouldn't even be a fed minimum wage. Each state should have the right to set their own minimum wage. Seems like a states right's issue to me. After all, $5 an hr in places like Miss, WV, etc might be more like $10 an hr in CT.

And when the fed minimum wage was raided in 07' according to the BLS only 2.3% of the workforce was makning the current fed minimum. And half of these unskilled workers were under 25- in other words your high school and college kids working part time jobs while they live with mommy and daddy.

So about 1%+ of your workforce was over 25 yr old making the fed minimum. And a lot of these unskilled workers were not the only income in the house.

And guess what happens when the minimum wage is raised. For the employers (often small businesses) of these unskilled workers, who not only have to play an increased wage but also other increased costs such as payroll taxes, etc, its often 2 choices: raises prices (often not an option) or lay of some of these unskilled workers.

We are seeing what happens when you attempt to replace good paying manufacturing jobs with the service industry.

That's because the rich keep exhibiting the behavior that got them rich (maximizing educational opportunity, hard work, entrepreneuralism, nuclear family and controlling childbirth, etc.) and the poor keep exhibiting the behavior that got them poor (floundering education, crime, drugs, alcohol, out of wedlock births, etc.).

I don't honestly know. You know what, maybe I will bow out of political talks since to you I am nothing but an uninformed, uneducated piece of human waste. I have REALLY tried to get more involved with politics since I was 21 and voted for the 1st time, but alas, I guess I really haven't learned anything at all. I'm just gonna go about my daily life, pay my taxes, and live my life without worrying about politics. Hell, I may even never vote again. It obviously does no good no matter who is running or who is in charge. I will leave the politics to you guys who are smarter, have degrees and have overall better lives. Obviously, those of us who got fired from our jobs and can't find work are not worth breathing the same air as everybody else.

Politicians are going to ru(i)n this country as they see fit and there is nothing the populace can do about it. Well, you would do well to avoid national elections as you can effect very little change. However, I would become very active in your local elections as they directly affect you (& your wallet) & you can have a big effect due to the lack of voter turnout.
