George Will Says Palin Won't Be Prez

Very interesting column today. The influential conservative columnist basically says that her "populist moment" will pass, that she isn't an intellectually serious candidate, and that her negatives are way too high -- even among the GOP -- to win. Will compared her to Bill Miller, the New York Congressman who was Goldwater's runnung mate in '64 and retired into respectful obscurity after the ticket's defeat.

But Will isn't a real conservative cuz he didn't support kicking ass in Iraq (to my recollection) and didn't support the surge in Afghanistan
I know why politicians and pundits can't say this, they don't want to be on the wrong side of the boat just in case she wins the nomination somehow, but I agree it is pretty obvious that she has every right to make her points and people have every right to listen but gawd.....
Of course even McCain showed he didn't get it either.

This is not her fault. She is what she is, and what she is merits no disdain. She is feisty and public-spirited, and millions of people vibrate like tuning forks to her rhetoric. When she was suddenly forced to take a walk on the highest wire in America's political circus, she showed grit.
She also showed that grit is no substitute for seasoning. She has been subjected to such irrational vituperation -- loathing largely born of snobbery -- she can be forgiven for seeking the balm of adulation from friendly audiences.

Probably because he actually has flesh and blood in the military (unlike the hawks in the last administration). I went through OCS with his son Jeff. Great guy. Got to meet daddy at graduation.

George Will is a really good guy - conservative yet balanced, sticks to his principles - very self-depreciating in person. This article is terrific - very complimentary of Palin and the position she was thrust into (and her response), tempered with a realistic assessment of her presidential chances (slim and none) and the political strength of the entire populism movement (counterbalance against a majority, but too whiny to hold actual power).

Worked for a very short time a Target Human Services Inc. and had his son as a client, Will was a great guy to meet and he hooked us up all the time with seats to Nats and Wizards games. We also got to go into the Nats clubhouse a few times (he son was a "manager" in the clubhouse).

Yes, I like Will. He, on more than one occasion, shows that he thinks for himself in a rational reasonable way. His fundamentals are conservative and market oriented and his foreign policy views are sensible.
He also writes some great stuff about baseball ( or he used to haven't seen it lately)

I like Will as well & enjoy him on "This Week". However, the opposite of rational & reasonable who appears on that show is Katrina VandeHuevel...the epitome of irrational, liberal, ignorant slut....

Will is completely off base with this.
Sarah WILL be president, and she'll be the best president in history. If Maggie can do it, Sarah can do it better.

If she is the one I am thinking of you are dead on. I do like alot of this weeks guest though. I always liked Krugman (while not agreeing with him much) but he seems to have forgot what they taught him in his economics classes.

and his partisanship (not to a candidate but to his politics have really made me scratch my head a little). I like Donna Breazeale
and I am missing George Snuffalufagus (sp). He had actually become my favorite sunday morning guy after Russert's death.

I've spotted him at an Orioles game.

Good read on this by Will. Palin has plenty of positives that keeps her in the news and for many people, she is extremely genuine and likeable. With that said, she just doesn't have the tools to 1) succcessfully navigate a Presidential Campaign and 2) just would be in over her head if she somehow summoned a miracle and won a Presidential election.
She works as a populist voice, but that only gets you so far. I don't see any way that she ends up as a nominee.

Of course.
Nice Simpsons ref, BTW. Should have figured Jon would pull that.

Populist moments always pass. Populism is nothing more than pandering to Joe Sixpack and the rest of the lowest common denominators. Can't win an election that way. Just ask William Jennings Bryan.

That's the one. Might as well have Rachel Maddow (sp) on like NBC does

Obama did... he fooled over 50% of the electorate with empty rhetoric.
