HAMPTON – A massive wind-swept fire destroyed a block of five buildings on Ocean Boulevard last night, including the Surf Hotel and Happy Hampton Arcade.
Nearly 100 firefighters from 35 fire departments battled the 6-alarm blaze that broke out just after midnight. The fire came at the height of last night's fierce nor'easter that battered the region with wind gusts to 70 mph.
Firefighters are still at the scene of the blaze where charred building remains continue to smolder.
The fire began at the Surf Hotel and quickly spread to nearby buildings. Others that were destroyed were the Happy Hampton Arcade and Mrs. Mitchell's souvenir shop. All three buildings were closed for the season and were vacant at the time of the blaze, fire officials said.
