American Community Survey

Anyone else ever received the American Community Survey? The Census Bureau sends this crap out to people now becasue there was so much resistance to the census long form. Now they are doing the census every 10 years and random people get this as well every year because they don't want to wait 10 years for this information.
It asks questions including name, date of birth, income, where you work - both company name and address, what time you leave for work, if you have a toilet, running water, $ amount of your house payment, questions about your utility bills, among other things.

The whole thing is a bunch of shit!

every 10 years since 1790 at least.
I'm not really sure the reasoning behind some people's anti-census sentiment, either.

The census is every ten years. However in 2000 the feds caught a lot of flack over the long form and the questions it asked so they changed their methods. Now the official census is every 10 years. Everyone will get a census short form in April. However beginning in 2005(?) they started this American Community Survey which asks questions that were on the long form. It goes out monthly to be people across America.
I have no problem answering the census. However I do have a HUGE problem with this survey. The survey is supposed to be anonymous yet I have to put my name, address, date of birth, etc. on it. It has a bar code on it so it can be identified to my house. I have to put where I work, the address of where I work, and what time I leave for work every day. You have to put how much you make, how much your mortgage payment is, what your annual utility bills are, a whole bunch of personal info. The law says that Census employees cannot disclose this information. Yet they've lost over 1000 computers the in last several years. How many government computers have been hacked into? If it is supposed to be anonymous why does it need my personal identification information?

C'mon Jay. If you've read this forum, you know the reasoning: it's from the government and it's mandatory.
Those two things in combination make a certain segment of this country go apeshit.

Might as well just mail a blood and urine sample along with it.

Some of the stuff is a downright impertinence to ask.
I noticed when doing some family genealogy that lots of my ancestors told a different story every 10 years about where their ancestors were from. For example, I have a great grandaddy that was born in Ohio, Illinois, New Hampshire, or Northern Ireland, depending on which census you believe.

Exactly, and just like those right wingers who were and still are for the patriot act said, "you don't have to worry if your are not doing anything wrong.
Are you hiding secrets from big brother?

Excellent point, Pols. Just another example of the

The Govt hasn’t shown that the information will be secure once gathered.
------------
Federal documents obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request reveal that two divisions of the Department of Homeland Security – charged with assuring the integrity of U.S. borders and the safety of residents – lost nearly three computers every day for a year.
But an official statement assures citizens that no "sensitive" data was lost.

And on the Patriot Act
“With virtually zero debate - or media attention - President Barack Obama has signed a one-year extension for what many considered the most crucial and controversial aspects of the USA PATRIOT Act. The provisions, set to expire Sunday without the signature of Obama, include extensions to allow:
-1) "roving" wiretaps, permitting surveillance on multiple phones and e-mail addresses.
-2) court-approved seizures of records and property in anti-terrorism operations.”

All of that is info you tell the IRS every year or a company every month.

I agree it is invasive, but...
Section. 2. Clause 3: ...The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct...
I don't want to be the guy calling for Washington to follow the Constitution and not agree with this part. The underlined part lets them ask whatever they want.

Step 1:
Wear tin foil hat...
Step 2:
Don't put your name, don't put your SSN, and scribble out the barcode.
Step 3:
Remove tin foil hat.

Who doesn't have a problem with the IRS? We still offer up the info without too much of a fight.

I don't have a problem paying my share to keep this country running.

I don't agree with that. It says that an enumeration...a count...shall be made by such manner as they shall direct. That just says they decide how to make the count. When you're asking all the questions the Census asks nowadays, you're going way beyond counting people. Saying that the manner in which people are counted will be determined by Congress isn't saying Congress shall gather personal information during that count.
I don't have a problem with government asking people for information. I do disagree with accepting the idea that people are required to provide it. My understanding is that people are required by law to answer all the questions on the Census form. That's wrong, and I don't think the Constitution is giving Congress the power to do that in saying that a count shall be made and that the count will be made in the manner Congress directs.
All "enumerate" means is to count or list. It doesn't mean "obtain a detailed description of each element counted."

Then you're in the minority in this country in that you don't have a problem with a tax code over 70,000 pages that takes over 100k IRS employees to run, several hundred K CPAs and tax attorneys and hundreds of billions a year in compliance costs.

Simpler tax code = fewer loopholes for people to get out of paying taxes.
So that will never fly.
