because people think that particular philosophy is effective despite history and basic economic principals contradicting those so called "facts"

depends on what you mean by that, I'm against the government intervening with the economy so you could say I'm like that but I'm also for consumer protection (to an extent) which could mean I'm not for that.

Government can protect us from an out of control business, but who will protect us from an out of control government?

That's like asking why some folks are pro-abortion.

No one loves big government. But a few examples of why big government isn't neccessarily the evil menace that's portrayed are:

Lunar exploration and the 1200 and some inventions created by NASA many of which private industry is benefiting from today.

The Federal Highway Act which served as a tremendous subsidy to the auto manufacturers and the oil companies.

The US military which not only wins wars, but provides stability for oil markets and transportation of goods on a world wide basis.

The U.S. department of the Interior which manages public lands and provides infrastructure for private use including resource extraction.

A relatively just court system where contracts are enforced.

Safe Food

Safe Drugs

Clean Air

Clean Water

The list goes on...

A local example would be the Spokane River which like many waterways in the 1970's was so polluted it was virtually devoid of life. Today, thanks to big government, it is much more clean, supports a decent population of native redband rainbow trout and is useable by all while the pollutive industries that jeopardized the health of the river are for the most part still viable - just a little less destructive in their practices.

The obvious problems with big government are the wastefullness of bureacracy (which occurs in any organization - public or private) and the tendency of some government officials towards totalitarianism (which also occurs in both public and private organizations). But when you throw in the profit factor of privatization, perhaps the wastefullness is a push (health care being an example)

That's not to say bureacracy and totalitariansim cannot and shouldn't be reduced, but big government is a neccessary evil of which we all receive tremendous benefits. And whether it's the air we breath, the cancer free environments, or the solid infrastructure our businesses are built on, that gets taken for granted sometimes.

Big government and big business work hand-in-hand...
The idea that our Federal Government protects us "from" big business is completely ridiculous

Just 20 minutes of research on our business dealings with 1/2 of Central America shows pretty clearly that our Federal Governments singular goal is to protect American big business interests - not human rights and certainly not democracy...

Guatemala
Honduras
Panama
Nicaragua
Venezuela
El Salvador

Every single one of those countries has experienced significant manipulation and in several cases complete governmental over throws at our hands... all for the single reason of protecting "Business Interests"

Big Business / Big Government = Brothers in Arms

To add, go back in history you have nationalism overthrown in Chile, Hawai'i and the famous Anglo-Iranian Oil Company war (plus many more).

All depends on how you define "big government"

A government is waaaay overstepping their bounds when they mandate/legislate who can or can not get married, or what types of medical procedures a person can elect to have done to their own body.

A government trying to provide a base level of security for the elderly, or access to basic health care for the poor is just preforming their basic human rights duties.

Voting incumbents out of office. If people would stop being blinded by religious, personal vendetta, etc. B.S.......WE have the control, WE just don't use it.

Kalm your list is very nice and if the government was just dealing with the things in your list I bet you 95% of the people in this country would support the government and your list.

The problem is all of the things you purposefully left off your list. Most of you know what those are and why the majority of this country dislikes them.

As far as resource extraction, that would be the dept of Ag with the National Forests.

"We" using the political process to steal from our neighbors is not "we."

They love it because they want the government to do for them what they don't want to do for themselves, or for someone else. Why should someone actually have to do something to get by in life? Just have the government do it for you.

We all love big government. We are just not very realisitic about our own level of self reliance. There are plenty of "small government" individuals and businesses bilking the system or as you say "stealing".
