Letter to AARP Executive Director

This was sent to Mr. Barry R. Rand, Executive Director of AARP, by an outraged former member:

Dear Mr. Rand,

Recently you sent us a letter encouraging us to renew our lapsed membership in AARP by the requested date. I know it is not what you were looking for, but this is the most honest response I can give you. Our gap in coverage is merely a microscopic symptom of the real problem, a deepening lack of faith.

While we have proudly maintained our membership for several years and have long admired the AARP goals and principles, regrettably, we can no longer endorse it's abdication of our values. Your letter specifically stated that we can count on AARP to speak up for our rights, yet the voice we hear is not ours. Your offer of being kept up to date on important issues through DIVIDED WE FAIL presents neither an impartial view nor the one we have come to embrace. We do believe that when two parties agree all the time on everything presented to them, one is probably not necessary. But, when the opinions and long term goals are diametrically opposed, the divorce is imminent. This is the philosophy which spawned our 200 years of government.

Once upon a time, we looked forward to being part of the senior demographic. We also looked to AARP to provide certain benefits and give our voice a power we could not possibly hope to achieve on our own. AARP gave us a sense of belonging which we no longer enjoy. The Socialist politics practiced by the Obama administration and empowered by AARP serves only to raise the blood pressure my medical insurance strives to contain. Clearly a conflict of interest conflict of interest there!

We do not understand the AARP posture, feel greatly betrayed by the guiding forces that we expected to map out our senior years and leave your ranks with a great sense of regret. We mitigate that disappointment with the relief of knowing that we are not contributing to the problem anymore by renewing our membership. There are numerous other organizations which offer discounts without threatening our way of life or offending our sensibilities.

This Presidential Administration scares the living daylights out of us. Not just for ourselves, but for our proud and bloodstained heritage. But even more importantly for our children and grandchildren. Washington has rendered Soylent Green a prophetic cautionary tale rather than a nonfiction scare tactic. I have never in my life endorsed any militant or radical groups, yet now I find myself listening to them. I don't have to agree with them to appreciate the fear which birthed their existence. Their borderline insanity presents little more than a balance to the voice of the Socialist mindset in power. Perhaps I became American by a great stroke of luck in some cosmic uterine lottery, but in my adulthood I CHOOSE to embrace it and nurture the freedoms it represents as well as the responsibilities it requires.

Your website generously offers us the opportunity to receive all communication in Spanish. ARE YOU KIDDING??? Someone has broken into our 'house', invaded our home without our invitation or consent. The President has insisted we keep the perpetrator in comfort and learn the perp language so we can communicate our reluctant welcome to them.

I DON'T choose to welcome them.

I DON'T choose to support them.

I DON'T choose to educate them.

I DON'T choose to medicate them, pay for their food or clothing.

American home invaders get arrested.

Please explain to me why foreign lawbreakers can enjoy privileges on American soil that Americans do not get?

Why do some immigrants have to play the game to be welcomed and others only have to break & enter to be welcomed?

We travel for a living. Walt hauls horses all over this great country, averaging over 10,000 miles a month when he is out there. He meets more people than a politician on caffeine overdose. Of all the many good folks he enjoyed on this last 10,000 miles, this trip yielded only ONE supporter of the current administration. One of us is out of touch with mainstream America . Since our poll is conducted without funding, I have more faith in it than one which is power driven.

We have decided to forward this to everyone on our mailing list, and will encourage them to do the same. With several hundred in my address book, I have every faith that the eventual exponential factor will make a credible statement to you.

I am disappointed as hell.

I am scared as hell.

I am MAD as hell, and I'm NOT gonna take it anymore!

 I haven't laughed this hard in weeks...!!!

I guess each administration has it's demographic that it "scares the hell out of"
The previous one scared the hell out of 19 year olds with it's motto

"Come join us and die alone in the sand 10 thousand miles from home - for reasons that we can't really explain and for a people who don't really care. An inglorious war fabricated by men who never fought in a war - in fact mostly were draft dodgers themselves. Come, - do as your told, wrap yourself in Old Glory and die - because it seems so romantic"

 The tables have turned - Who's scared now..!!! (Awesome)

The difference is, that administration (based on your definition) only scared about 250,000 folks.

This one scares about 100,000,000 folks. :kisswink:

Sonny,

Those 19 year olds don't know what scared is. At least, they had a choice whether to join up or not. Try being right out of high school in the late 60's or early 70's when the draft was going on. You didn't have a choice whether or not you joined and got shipped out of country to Nam. Seeing all the body bags coming back and knowing that there was a chance you could end up there whether you wanted to go there or not. Now that was scarey.

So a lot of seniors, you guys are making fun of have been there, done that, in a lot worse situation than this generation.

And a lot of us have been around long enough to know that this country can't keep spending money we don't have like we have been doing the last few years. Sooner or later, it is going to come back to bite us on the ass (more like us old guys' kids and grandkids than us). You are probably too young to remember the hyper-inflation of the Jimmy Carter years. I got a feeling that is what we are looking at with the runaway spending. We can't just keep on printing money or eventually it won't be worth the paper it is printed on.

And you think we seniors shouldn't be worried about the country?

Doc

Quite the contrary,
You're free to spin yourself right up into a tizzy over this or any old thing you want...

I'm simply suggesting that what one group fears another might embrace
and as ridiculous as this situation has been and ultimately become - it doesn't scare me in the least
Do I agree with the Healthcare bill - No I don't
Do I think Obama is a turd in a 15 hundred dollar suit - Yup

Do I find humor in this whole situation: 100% absolutely
Does it seem joyfully ironic in many ways: 100% absolutely
Is a large part of my joy based on that fact that this whole thing pisses of Conservatives: Of course...

It's not the healthcare bill that scares me. It is the overall spending this country has been doing in the last few decades (and I'm including Republican and Democrats in this).

This is what scares me: National Debt Clock

And the $40,000+ figure is for every man, woman, and child in the United States. And every year we have huge deficit spending, we are adding to that number. You think we are ever going to pay this off?

You can't just keep printing money and have the dollars be worth anything. Sooner or later there will be a big crash and it "ain't" going to be pretty.

There aren't any free rides, folks, because sooner or later someone is going to have to pay for it, one way or another.

Try over-spending money like the government with your personal finances and see how long you last.

My Ex-wife  never worked but somehow felt perfectly comfortable spending money at an alarming tempo... once she actually went on the Mercedes-Benz website selected all (100%) of the options on an ML500 and selected the "buy now" button... actually if I remember it was an ML55 - she got it in the divorce free and clear

2 weeks later a Truck with an ML500 rolled up and dropped off "our new car" I can laugh now..
$68,000 on my Amex...

Her response: Oh, Yeah.. I forgot to tell you "we" got a new car...
That was kind of my introduction into American politics

I haven't volunteered for anything, especially higher taxes and more bureacratic red tape to navigate as a business owner.

No fear here. I simply chose not to join AARP (yes I am eligible and I know you are shocked) because I won't join a group individually that engages in political campaigning of the sort that AARP does. Whether I like their views or not, just a matter of principle.

Now if the AARP wanted to provide insurance, travel discounts and hair color treatement (or whatever they provide) and stay out of politics, I would probably be right there with the other geezers  :D
