Here's something I think we can all agree would be great for the country but will never happen in a million years Alternative voting

Many people are afraid to cast a third party vote because they are afraid it will hurt their preferred party's nominee. Examples would be Leftys voting for Nader and hurting Gore or rightys voting for Paul and hurting McLame. With alternative voting you get to rank you preference so that if your third party candidate doesn't win your vote goes to your major party candidate.

such as:

1) Nader
2) Obama
3) McLame

0r:

1) Paul
2) McLame
3) Obama

If neither Nader or Paul has enough votes to win, the second choices go into effect, and you didn't help the opposition by expressing your discontent. Apparently they have it in Australia.

I'd like to see political parties outlawed. Maybe something like antitrust laws for politics. It would never happen because it would take the political parties to support it... but, I dunno.



A problem I see with your idea is that the Democratic Party and the Republican Party would then get an official label as the "major parties" and any other party would be officially treated as inferior. I'm not sure if that would be a good thing.

I think we desperately need a way to make 3rd parties viable... but, I'm not sure the best way or most realistic way to do it.... except just hope it happens on its own (not likely).

I would not want my vote going to Obama or McCain "PERIOD".

I like Skelly's idea of no political parties.
